this might get moved to Sports and Fitness.....
in gym today we had to do some push ups. I could NOT do them at ALL. I could barely touch my chin to the ball and when I do I collapse completely
I also have this problem with holding up a leg or arm for a extended period of time. I just can't do it. and when you're supposed to hold a person's legs up and cartwheel them, I can't do it, I just collapse.
I just feel so weak and sore from doing these, what should I do ? >_<
Also, I can't lift dumbells that are like 10 and over. I have to do like 2 or 5...

I might be a little hypocrite[cause I am not doing it - lazy bones] - but best exercise is to build your whole body. Try jogging; sprint briefly, lower the pace, elongate the jog and repeat the same tactic again and again. You will build up all the necessary muscles, and have a better stamina. By doing this, you can withstand any tough exercises.
Try swimming, and other alternatives. After that, you can easily left your body. Ever heard of Gradualism? Try lifting those 2s and 5s(Kilos?) in the beggining. Your body will work them out eventually.
Make sure you do the stretching exercises. Not because of injury(infact, people get more injuries from doing stretching exercises and warm up) - your body will become flexible and more adaptable. You don't want that ugly rigid body now, do you?
But make sure that your body is fueled with the right amount of food. Increase your fruit and vegetable intake - replace anything artificial[candies, chocolate] with fruits.
Use honey instead of corn syrup - try to get sugar only from those things. Also make sure that your food is balanced; too less protein and carbons, and you will build nothing. Minerals are needed for metabolism and healthy muscular growth.[GOD! I am freaking hypocrite!]. Stay away from canned and artificial foods. Nuff said.

Running has nothing to do with upper body strength.
Anyway Jessica, you just need to work at it. Try to get a routine of doing some kind of bodyweight work every day or couple of days. If normal pushups are too hard, do girl pushups from the knees. They're easier and you should be able to handle it.
Even if you can't do much, don't let that stop you from doing anything. Every little bit helps.

Start with the low weights. you cant expect to have done nothing and then be great at it.
also what david said about girl push ups :P
im willing to admit i find myself doing em to try to get more in so i can do full push ups a bit better [i struggle to get 10 before being unable to hold my body weight]
if you hurt yourself you're regressing far more.
so stop when youre in pain.
noteing that 'sore' is a different feeling. obviouslly if you're too tired to do it don't try.

Running has nothing to do with upper body strength.
True, but it comes with gifts.
While there is the potential for injury in running (just as there is in any sport), there are many benefits. Some of these benefits include potential weight loss, improved cardiovascular health, increased muscle mass, increased bone density, and an improved emotional state ~ Wiki.

Start with small weights if you can't take anything above 10. They might seem pointless, but they do help. Try out modified pushups like someone else said, and make sure you have a healthy diet with lots of protein. Keep it up and you'll be able to do 100 straight pushups (http://hundredpushups.com/) =)
