My power supply smells like some sort of smoke, is it overloaded, or is it going bad? Oh well *smokes a salmon*

I just cleaned it off with dust off a few days ago, but the smell stopped afetr blasting my tornado fan, so I think it was just dusty. I may actually overload it in half an hour when I plug my cd drive back in tho, not sure how many watts it is or how many I'm using. Thanks for the input though. Worst case scenario something in the power supply melts when I turn it on :p

better than what i did to my old friend. you know in the back of the power supply theres a power current where you can switch? i turned it to 260 just about a couple days before i left florida and a week later he called saying "Carmen! my computer blew up! it was flashing like a firecracker!" lol i still remember this..

If your PSU smells, replace it. I'm pretty sure your computer doesnt take kindly to drastic over/undervoltage. If you have a multimeter you can test it too.

lol unless you had parts extremely tolerant of wrong voltages dont expect much in there to work.

what did your friend do to you?
makes a total fool of himself embrassing me and tries to copy what i do to look cool. plus he rarely does any homework and all he does is play either guild wars and Wow. so i somewhat did his mom a favor because his mom wants him to read a book on his spare time. no games caused him to become a bit more active in his school work but then after 3 weeks later his mom bought a new computer and now he's a slouch again not doing so well in school.

Hehe, it died. I'll replace it with this one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103940

Also, I'll pressurize the case with this fan to improve airflow to the PSU. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811999344

Notice the PSU automatically detects voltage, so you won't be doing that to me :p

I'm pretty sure I'll get that, because it supprot the latest technology, but has the backward compatibility needed for my current processor, mobo, and video card. See ya in like half a week, if I don't get the chance to get on upstairs again before that.

As for that fan, use it as exhaust. You want a negative air pressure in the case.

No, I'll have pretty much equal in and out flow with the fan, that way all of the air in there will flow the way I want it, cooling the CPU, GPU, PSU, and HDDs. It wouldn't make sense to suck air out of the case throught he front and back, not to mention the fact that I would just be recirculating the same air.

i think all my case fans are blowing air in at the moment! lol i didnt do it on purpose, some of the fans i couldnt remember which way they spun, i need to sort it out at some time lol! my psu auto detects voltage aswell.

You should have a 120mm at the front toward the bottom sucking air in and at the hard drives, and at least one good 80mm below the psu sucking out, and if you have vents in the door, take some large pvc and some good tape to make a funnel going directly to the cpu fan. This setup will cool the hard drives, cpu, video cards, ram, etc.

Well i meant just to make sure that the pressure in the case isnt higher than outside but ok. Who cares if its recirculating the same air? As long as that air is at a cooler temp then it doesnt matter.

It makes more sense to just suck cool air from the front bottom and blow it out the back top. Also, it wouldn't matter if I had fifty fans blowing into the case, the pressure inside wouldn't increase much because of all the ventilation holes.

Yes, but, air wouldnt be flowing. It would be pushed out and some areas will just sit and get hot.

I have an 80mm fan at the front sucking air in, and 2x 80mm fans on the side sucking air in, and 80mm fan blowing on the HDD and an 80mm fan thats blowing air out at the back, system temp is usually 25-35C. I dont have any 120mm fan spaces so i cant fit one!

Smoke? Sounds bad. I'd probably fly away in a black helicopter/cadillac. Or, failing that, turn off your computer for a few hours and let it cool down. That's the only thing I can think of that might fix it.
