I don't know much about AT&T (live in UK), but surely there's a way you can prove to your dad that you can do it. Maybe even sign a contract with your dad and if you break it i.e. forget a payment then, maybe some sort of punishment like a week of washing or something. Either that or you can try a lot of nagging/persuading and maybe he'll realise your really determined about this and realise your responsible enough.
If it goes badly though surely there are alternatives. For example i myself don't like contracts but if I top up £15 a month i get unlimited texts and internet which is all i need so maybe you could look for something like that?

Yeah, its called a deposit. It is a bit foolish to "co-sign" someone elses credit obligation. Since you are under 18, you could use some help. That doesnt mean that you should escape putting up a deposit (to him) based on your past financial history.
