can anyone suggest a very good anti-virus software that is free and won't expire?

Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/) is probably the best I've ever had. But you have to pay for that. There aren't many ones you can get for free other than the one ronnie gave you, but if you're looking for something that will not only protect you while using the internet but while you're doing other things as well you'd be better off getting a cheap annual one.

No, I cannot - the market simply doesn't have that.
On the free side, you have Avast and AVG, but their filtering quality has been questioned several times. You also have ClamWin, but it doesn't have a resident scanner, reducing its value.
On the paying side, you have the major players: Kaspersky, Norton 2010 or NOD32 all received good critiques. Note that you can often get rebates when buying licenses for more than a computer at a time, so it can be interesting to group-buy with friends.
I'd suggest checking AV-Comparatives (http://www.av-comparatives.org/) that provide very good insight on the current quality of the antivirus softwares available on the market.
Hope this helps!

If you want anti-spyware/virus, then Avast is already a good one. It doesn't expire, if you are using the normal pack(free bundle) and registered to it.
It even saved my friend's computer(2000+ infected files!), where Nod32 and Norton failed to do so.
That upgraded version of Avast will only give you extra protection against crackers, spam mails and something called "virtual environment" or something for "Safer browsing".
So far, Avast did a good job keeping my computer clean and sane.

I use avast! as well, and it's superior to anything in my opinion. It catches everything the Internet throws at me.
Norton and McAfee are overprices pieces of crap.

I have to agree with you on this one. Not because I use Avast! - but I have used almost every anti-viruses out there.
Norton 360, ESET Nod32, Kaspersky Ghost, McAfee and even AVG - you name it!
=======
Avast! is fast, effective and well made.

I have to say that there are two FREE ones that i think are the best. First AVG Free (http://free.avg.com/) it works well and has a resident shield and catches almost anything the net ever threw at me. And second Microsoft Security Essentials.
Hope I Helped. :)

We have Kaspersky in both the tower and laptops. Dad paid like $35 for the install, and it's updated generally as we sleep.
Hey, if it's free, it's probably NOT going to be all it's cracked up to be.
Also, how much will it cost to have it de-bugged once infected? You really otta consider that.
$35 is cheap "peace of mind."

There's a lot of great free software. The open source software movement has created a lot of kick-ass products. Not just antivirus like Avast!, but audio editors like Audacity and image editors like Paint.Net. There's even OpenOffice, which is good for the price (which is free, of course).
I've always found proprietary antivirus programs to be nothing more than an annoyance, always bugging you to pay for the newest version.

Never buy Norton.
Kaspersky sucks.
McAfee does nothing.
Buy Nod32
