I'm in 9th grade, currently attending Pre-Ap Physics. I am doing fairly well in all other fields of education (one of these being another Pre-Ap class, US History). I feel at least moderately intelligent in those classes. However, I become the village idiot as soon as Pre-Ap Physics starts. I'm dyslexic, and therefore cannot do any mathematics beyond that of a 9th grade level- which is Algebra (such as linear equations, simple formulas like Y=MX+B and so forth). I cannot do dimensional analysis of any kind, or even scientific notation. It is not the concepts presented (I understand Dimensional Analysis involves the Si Base Units, and is used to check that measurments are in the correct format), it is just the execution (convert 50 miles/hr into kilometers/sec) that I have no possible way of performing. It is already too late to change classes, and if I did I would not be able to catch up with the basic class. I'm almost positive that I am doomed to fail (and this would be the first time I ever failed a class, mind you)- a D is apparently a "passing" grade but even if I manage to put all effort into homework (it's only graded for effort, and where I go it becomes 30 percent of your grade) and do every extra credit assignment- I am still going to bomb every single test that involves mathematics. And, from what I know, mathematics is the universal language of physics. I'm fucked. What do I do? :(

Are you allowed to use a graphing calculator?

In my school, during science periods that involve equations and formulae (Chemistry, Physics and doodads) we're allowed to use calculators for such, so I think you'll survive. Your only problem now is the formulae, good luck.

Nope. It says, in wonderful bold print in our syllabus, NO GRAPHING CALCULATORS. Plus I can do Dimensional Analysis online (For those who use BING it just gives you the answer if you put "X miles in X kilometers" or whatever. Too bad we don't even use computers that much. :(

Is your lack of ability in math tied to a learning disability? If so, you might be able to get an IEP that allows you to use a graphing calculator.

Physics is really just applied mathematics. Even if you get some specific LD help, it's going to be a challenge.
With perseverance and the right attitude, I am confident that you will get through it, though.

I'm partially retarded or possibly dyslexic if that helps any

if you were retarded you wouldn't be in pre-AP classes, clear up now.
if you're not good or at lesast OK at algebra, you shouldn't be taking the higher level physics.
it is basically the core of the course.
school hasn't been going on too long i really reccomend you switch out.

Is that diagnosed? If so, talk to your school about getting an IEP that'll allow you to use your calculator.
