A FERAL family bashed a woman celebrating her 21st birthday at a Darwin restaurant - because she took too long to pay a bill.
Jacqui Stephens had a clump of hair ripped out, was kicked in the groin and punched in the head in a vicious attack by a woman, her husband, their adult daughter and another man at the Hog's Breath Cafe on Mitchell St.
The older woman in the pack then bit a male staff member on the arm when he tried to stop the attack.
Ms Stephens was encouraged to speak out about the terrifying experience by her girlfriends, who have been reading about the NT News Just Think campaign against the scourge of alcohol-fuelled violence in the Darwin CBD.
Merianne McLean was one of five friends who watched, horrified and frozen in shock, as the birthday girl was attacked by the family.
"It was disgusting. You don't expect that in a family restaurant," she told the NT News.
Ms Stephens said the attack last Wednesday night started when she got into an argument with the family at the cashier desk.
She said the intoxicated father abused her and her friends because they were splitting the bill and holding him up.
Ms Stephens admitted several choice words were exchanged between the two parties before the older woman shoved her and grabbed her hair.
Ms Stephens then grabbed the woman's hair before her daughter kicked her in the groin.
The father and another male, believed to be the daughter's boyfriend, joined in punching and kicking her.
It took two male staff members and the manager to break up the attack.
Ms Stephens said it was not on for a young woman to be physically attacked when she is just out having fun with her friends.
"They just could not wait two minutes for us to pay," she said.
Ms Stephens has made a formal complaint to police.
She said Hog's Breath Cafe told her they would give police a copy of the CCTV footage of the assault.
Police were continuing their investigations.
