Neither are by any means new material or "impressive."
The first is second-rate and boring through and through, I'm sorry, but it just is.
The second is the same; however if you did the pen tooling yourself, then it's very impressive but after looking at the whole piece, it's unlikely that you can pen on that level.

Improvement?
Overused render is overused, but I like it. :P I also used a stock C4D. I know.. go ahead and flame me.

Improvement in appeal? Yes.
This looks like a sig, only in massive proportions, so as such:
There is no "overused render." Only good and bad renders; the chief is usually a bad render due to a lack of flow.
The monotone and the distortion effect kind of ruined this sig to be honest.
The appeal is there, just not the execution.

It was meant for a banner on a post on another forum. Here is an edited version.

It's too sharp. Also, the colors need to be more crisp. The piece needs to be welcoming aesthetically, this however is the opposite. Try blurring the background and sharpening the focal, this helps to focus peoples eyes to the center area. As for banners, they shouldn't be overly dramatic. With banners, simpler is usually better; VT however, is a horrible example of that. As for text, it's not too bad to be honest, but you should put it near (possibly slightly overlapping) the render. You can use my signature as an example for that.
