View Full Version : Moving out from home, hopefully not going to starve!

I am moving out from home for school. Last year I lived in a dormitory, so I was able to use the dining hall. This year, I am in an apartment.
I think I will eat at school for lunch pretty much everyday, and breakfast should be easy to cover (cereal, toaster waffles, bagels).
But what should I do for dinners? I don't even know how to cook. Can anyone suggest simple, (almost) foolproof meals that are somewhat healthy?
I really like the following ingredients because they (can be) healthy and are relatively cheap:
Rice, chicken, tuna, Chinese greens (Anybody know how to cook these? I am not Chinese, but it's so delicious), eggs.

Rice, is pretty much the easiest thing in the entire world. Buy the instant shit, might not taste as good, but it's simple. Read the directions.
Pasta is easy too, you can find sauces in the store, or you can make your own, just look up some recipes online.
I could live off of grilled cheese and mac and cheese, with some salad.

So today was my first day of cooking.
I made pasta shells with pre-made white cheddar sauce and put some tuna in it. Then I made a salad to go with it. I don't know how I'm going to deal with cooking though when I actually have school. SIGH.

Ramen noodles, a monkey could make them and they are cheap as fuck.
Just go out and get a cookbook and start trying to cook meals that sound good. Pretty soon it'll all come easy.

Its impossible to mess up with a CrockPot. :-) Just make sure there is some liquid. Dont prepare, just toss stuff in like the hobos do. Then add a few cheap spices.
As long as the gentle aroma of dinner doesnt bother people near or in the apartment. You dont want to live on Ricearoni all year.

Salad, sandwiches, multi-grains, kraft dinner, noodles, frozen veggies, frozen dumplings, fruits, baby carrots, takeout, more salad. It's all good, I've lived off them for two years.
You'll want to experiment with different combinations and see what you prefer best, though. Good luck!

Hot Pockets. I could live on them. And we get these 3 Minute microwave pizzas from Kroger, and they're really good.

Hot Pockets are good tasting but ridiculously unhealthy. You do realize how disgusting they look after a while.
Microwave TV dinners like lasagna and other pastas are where it's at.

Its not just the cooking ease, its the cleanup. I will do anything to avoid dealing with cold grease. Cooking hamburgers? Easy?

Ramen noodles and mac & cheese are both extremely easy, but you can't live entirely off of that. Hamburger and tuna helper are incredibly easy, just follow the directions. Sloppy joes are easy too, as well as hamburgers. Salads are easy to throw together. Tuna sandwiches are almost idiot-proof, and make a quick, easy meal when you're in a hurry. Same with egg salad, though it might take some trial and error to hard boil eggs. Speaking of eggs, scrambled eggs are easy, and bacon isn't too hard. Toast is self-explanatory. So there's a decent breakfast right there. Of course cereal or oatmeal is easy too.
Chicken breasts are pretty easy to cook once you get the hang of it. Just make sure it's cooked all the way through before you eat it- sort of cut it open and check. If you have chicken breasts with black beans and brown rice- mmmm, sooo good! Chicken with rice and cream of mushroom soup is also delicious. Really, I have a whole bunch of chicken recipes that I could post- let me know if you're interested :)
