TAMPA --
A former Leto High School student was arrested for plotting a school shooting, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
Detectives say that the 17-year-old suspect had told several people over the summer that he planned a mass shooting at the high school on November 11, 2011.
After investigations dating back to July, detectives seized a .22-caliber rifle, a bow and arrow, books about firearms, and a computer from the suspect's residence. The computer had a Columbine video game and showed previous searches for the Columbine and the Virginia Tech school shootings and Tampa gun shops, according to detectives.
In the suspect's arrest report, it indicates that he claims he was trying to break the record of the Columbine and Virginia Tech school shootings by shooting and killing everyone he could. Detectives say that the suspect also threatened to blow up Leto High School.
Detectives say the suspect denied the accusations and said he was merely joking with his friends about the shooting.
Speaking at a press conference Wednesday night, H.C.S.O. spokesperson Larry McKinnon said they take all threats seriously.
"We're going to take it like it's real," he said. "It's not something to joke about. It's like yelling fire in a crowded movie theatre."
McKinnon said the tip came through Crime Stoppers.
The suspect was arrested at his home on August 24 before school started and taken to the Orient Road Jail.
He has been charged with solicitation to commit murder and threat to discharge a destructive device.
The teen is alleged to have planned a mass shooting that would be even worse than the Virginia Tech massacre. That is the scariest part.
