Hey VT community, I've seen on a number of forums a 'thank' or 'thank you' button. It's pretty much like the rep thing but it's alot better. For example: If I was to post a thread asking for advice on hair loss and somebody was to post a good anwser I would thank them for it and they would get a level up. And under their display picture on the forum it says "Thank 1 time in 1 post"

This is better than rep how?

I dont see any point in having thanks in addition to rep because they are basically doing the same job.

I'm not saying it's better then rep but it's just something that can replace rep easily and you can click the number of times thanked and it brings you to a page with all the posts.

You can get a history of your rep here under User CP and link to every post that was repped.

lol, you dont need to apologise to me or to anyone else. Tell you what, I'll give you some rep and then you can see how it works :)

Aha, I see. Any chance you could send a link my way of the page to view your rep?

Just click the little link called "User CP". It's at the top, above the first post, on the left hand side.

I see it now thank you. Before when I was getting my previous rep It wasn't showing up there. I wonder why..

I am a big fan of the thank you addon it allows other to see specifically where you were thanked.

The only thing it lacks, when compared to the reputation system, is a negative.
But I do like that its unlimited, where on the rep system, you can only rep x times a day.

That's a configurable option

Thanks would be good when someone gives advice. But I guess it won't be added here.

a thank you can be given while you give them a rep. but then again you can only give it so many times.

And thank you's are publicly visible..

I don't see why we need both.

Its actually one of the comon used features on a site similar to this one.

I can see how this is good, there are always many posts that are worth thanking and letting others see THOSE answer are better than the rest.
draws the attention away from the stupid answers, and this is public, unlike rep.
Even if the person has a high rep which many do, it doesn't mean their answers are any better than the rest.

With a public option is a lot better.

But that's just my opinion.

But then people will just bitch like they do with rep cos someones got a higher thankyou ratio than them or whatever
or someones response got thankyoud and theirs didnt

boo hoo.. since when do we care about the whining?
people whine, it'll be done with or without the option.

that is hardly a reason to not include it.

I've never seen a thank you complaint on any of the sites ive been on that use them.

Also, theres a quick fix... the person who gave the thanks, or a moderator can simply click the "remove thanks" button.

Well i think with it being public people will start harrasing other meembers with "why did you thank their response and not mine"
then thats just a whole new can of worms to replace or work with a system thats pretty decent as it is and i dont think the rep system needs changing

I don't think that will be such a big deal, and the thank you addon doesn't influence the rep system whatsoever, or I don't think it does.

The following is an example based on a question I have received from someone. It is an example, not meant to bash P101 threads.

OP: "Hi, I need to know if masturbation will make my penis grow any larger."
R1: "Dude, who cares?"
R2: "Are you that little? (:"
R3: "No, Masturbation proven NOT to increase penis size."
R4: "I've always kinda wondered this myself."
R5: "I don't know."
+Quote R3 From Topic Starter: "Hey! Thanks! Your answer really helped!"

It's as simple as that to be honest. If people won't type it, they won't really hit the button anyway, so why bother?

In some forums, typing "Thanks" is just a waste...

On VT it's not. It serves the same purpose as a "Thanks" button and it's within VT rules.
On top of that, if staff decided (not to go off-topic) later to start locking solved threads, then seeing a "Thanks" post as a reply and not some small subtext, would make it easier for them in that process.

how so? I mod a site and it makes no difference....

I see Josh's point trae
VT is huge, theres thounsands of posts in p101 alone, its just impossible to check which ones are thanked by the op and which arent
when it would be so much easier to see the op say thanks in a post since then we dont need to do stupid searching for a thankyou tick

Actually the thanks button is incredibly easy to use and each post that receives thanks will have it displayed towards the bottom. Certainly a hell of a lot easier than typing 'thanks'.

A lot of forums that employ the feature have 'Thanks button abuse' infractions as well, as some people do mindlessly spam the function, but it's relatively easy to remove them.

Alot of people end up using it as the facebook like feature, so that its there, then they make a post supporting the post they thanked. Its good in other areas than p101, rotw for example.

Ive seen this feature on alot of sites. And its one of my personal faves.

Yes, but a lot of sites aren't VT.
Again I say it, surely it's easy to hit a thank you button, but the point remains: If members won't type "Thanks" then they won't use the button. They both take three seconds to perform and moreover the "thank you" button is an end result of people whining and being too lazy to type a simple six letter word, or in most cases, "thx."
The "Thanks level" that was proposed is also a lot of times used along side of rep or with rep; however, VT as a community has come to incorporate the rep system for private thank you's and returning that favor. On top of this, most "thank you" functions don't operate like the VT rep system- the system obviously assuming senior members are harder to please, thus earning more rep from a higher rep member than a newb- whereas most thanks systems simply assume we're all on an equal level. What does this result as on VT? A thank you level of 1k+ for most members in little to know time especially due to the hell it would be for staff to mod it for abuse. Spammers would have a thanks level well over 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, and so on in little to no time mostly from threads like the facts threads or other random threads.

"Oh, this post is spam but I like it! *THANKS*"
