View Full Version : Homework

I'm just past halfway through my first week of high school, and I'm already buried in homework. You think I'd be stressed and annoyed, but I'm actually fine with it.
My classes are fun, and the homework keeps me occupied. Without it I'd probably be doing something unproductive and pointless, like staring at my Facebook news feed or playing Rock Band. Focusing on getting my homework done ASAP and in good quality makes me feel better about myself, leaves free time for after I finish it, and helps me work on my attention span.
I've learned to appreciate homework and concentrate on it as much as I can so I can do well this year in every class.
How do you guys feel about homework?

Homework is quite pointless imo, unnecessary written exercises are just time wasters. Study now that is different, learn what you need to know and you'll do fine but repetitive exercises on the same thing as you already did in class is so pointless.

I understand homework that is meant to teach you new things, but when teachers give homework just because "students should have homework," then it is stupid in my opinion.

Yeah, hopefully my teachers won't be like that this year.

The homework I get isn't repetitive, it's pretty much designed to prepare us for whatever test or quiz that's coming up.

Pretty much the first few weeks of new years are review for me...I abandoned a lot of homework last year. >_> It's a mixed feeling to me.

I hate it, and at the same time I love it.
Sometimes I feel as though I understand something in class, but I'll get to study hall or AP and start my homework and I realize that I have no idea what I'm doing. I will either go then and get help if I can, or I wait until the next day before class and get some help. One day during Geometry I thought I knew what I was doing, but did the homework anyways, and I got every single question wrong. So that day I went in to redo the homework, and my teacher walked me through every question. I'm not afraid to ask for help, it's necessary sometimes.
Math homework is so much fun to me. I love it.
English homework sometimes is annoying. I don't enjoy writing at all, so it's sometimes hard. Social Studies is my worst subject, I get names and dates confused. I remember names and what they were involved with, but I can never remember if they were for something or against it. Which is usually really important, ha.
Science is an inbetween. Earth Science was torture, I didn't enjoy the subject, so I found it hard to get on with the homework and studying. Chemistry wasn't so bad. I love Bio, and I'm taking AP Bio this year, so I'm looking forward to that.
I get crazy amounts of homework. I usually get home around 5 if it's during sports season, and I'll be up until sometimes 3 in the morning. Without stopping. I'll take like a 5 minute break to bring dinner to my room to continue, but other than that, it's no breaks.

I'm going to try and actually understand things by listening in class more and using my dad and the geometry book. One of my problems in algebra I last year was that I would do well on homework and quizzes, but I would do mediocre on tests.

Wow, I'm the exact opposite of you. I dislike math homework, it makes me freak out thinking I might have gotten something wrong. I love writing and social studies, because I'm good at writing (if I do say so myself) and social studies because I'm a foreigner and have done a lot of international vacationing. I'm naturally interested in that kind of stuff. I also like social studies for its political lessons, which I usually understand better than anyone else (see ROTW for more :P)

Wow, that's crazy. I could never survive doing that much work that late at night.

You guys need to lay off whatever's in front of you and think of homework as something that has to be done, or else it'll come back and make the next day worse. Once you start thinking of everything that'll pile up if you procrastinate, you'll force yourself to do it.

The homework (studying, doing papers, labs and such) for university courses I am fine with because these are courses that I've been wanting to take as they interest me. Doing work on it isn't a great stress for me as it can be fun to learn about the material.
In high-school, the homework was sometimes repetative and boring, although for other courses, it was less so. The senior years often didn't have the teachers checking whether we did the homework or not. The questions they would assign would of those that they would ask on a test or quiz so it was for practice. They'd explain the solutions if many students were confused on it or if they thought that homework question involved something unique. Other courses had lab reports to write or projects to create and present. The projects (had few) I hated because we had to work in groups and I got stuck with a lousy group with some stupid things the teacher wanted to see on the projects. The labs were interesting because we had to do research for it, although didn't have much access to journals, it allowed for a way to view the practical aspects.

ha it's my first day and I already have homework
anyways, I'm okay with homework as long as I know what to do and they aren't hard. I really like easy homework
I just don't like to do big projects because most of the time, no one wants to be a partner with me.......

I see your point, and I think homework can be a good thing, but that doesn't make me hate it any less. In a way I don't think it's fair; when adults come home from work they're doing working for the day. But kids never really get an escape from school. Not until summer or breaks, at least. I think we deserve at least a little bit of time to do what we want. :P Having a lot of homework is so stressful.
I wouldn't mind if your teachers simply had you do the work you couldn't finish in class as homework, but some teachers give extra assignments to be done specifically for homework, and that really bugs me. Like, yeah, I really wanted to spend my night working on a pointless homework assignment. I so appreciate this.

You need to learn how to work hard just as much as you need to learn everything else.

Yes, but hard work should accomplish something. When it's done for the sake of giving homework, it's pointless and insulting.

At risk of seeming glib, read what I said again. Knowing how to work hard is a skill in and of itself, and getting better at that skill is an accomplishment (and an extremely important one).

But it should be tied some kind of external feeling of success. Otherwise, it doesn't teach students how to work hard, it teaches them that teachers have no respect for their time.

I disagree. If you ever want to be successful in life, you'll have to do work that doesn't immediately reward you, and you'll have to do it quickly and well. Learning how to work hard in absence of some obvious reward is extremely important.

Yes, but you also need to learn to recognize when people are wasting your time and and at what point you need to recognize you're working with stupidity.

But even with that recognition, you'll still have to do it. Or quit.
Bottom line: you have to do lots of shit you don't want to in life, some forms of homework are designed to ensure that you can do those boring, stupid things efficiently and well.

But the point of doing well in school is that you never have to be in that position. The better your education, the more highly you're sought after, the less of that crap you have to put up with.
Your point is like saying every kid is going to skin their knee so we should make them trip so they can learn to take the pain.

You've obviously never held an entry-level job of the sort that can lead to a career. Even the most highly sought after people still have to do some boring work that must be done right and fast. Education will never prevent that, which is why it must teach it.

Even if one concedes that, do you really think it can be taught? I've found one can either do the work or they can't, but I've never seen a student learn to do it. I have seen several students who were turned off of learning by it though.

people complain that homework is pointless. it is not pointless. it reviews what you've learned. I don't get why people bother to not do their homework at all

Because it is boring compared to other things you could be doing. Like right now I'm putting off a paper I don't want to do that is due tomorrow, but I am still going to do it later once I get back from open house at my school.
