What do you think of tipping. Do you think it is necessary? Do you tip? I do not.

Yes I tip. Waiters make a low wage, and they depend on tips to make money. My dads been in the restaurant business since he was 16.

In most good British restaraunts it is usually added to the bill in the terms of a Service Charge however i sometimes do tip.
This is actually why apparently European places don't like Brits cuz we forget that u have to tip in other countries

I thought it was just common courtesy to leave a tip. I didn't know that it was acceptable not to. Huh. :P

I don't like not being tipped :( When I used to clean off tables a lot of people would tip it was really nice. Now we just have a jar so it's not like that anymore. On topic: Yes you should tip because a lot of times waiters/waitresses don't get paid a good wage. They work their ass off and all they want is some curiosity. It doesn't take too much to leave a couple bucks.

Waiters and waitresses have a lower pay rate. Minimum wage (Here, in NY) is $7.25 but I'm pretty sure waiters and such can make around $5.50 or something. So basically, after taxes and stuff are taken out of it, they're left with little, if anything, in their actual check. So, that means they rely on their tips to make money.
I always tip. Always, always, always. At places like ice cream shops and stuff, it might just be the change from whatever I bought, if I don't have any singles on me.
At sit down restaurants I'm actually a decent tipper. I go a little bit more than 15%, even more if the waiters were extra nice and stuff.
Food service isn't easy. Tips make it worthwhile though.

I don't see anything wrong with tipping, you're just trying to help someone who probably doesn't have as good pay as yourself.

it depends on the waiter/waitress if they are being bitchy i wont or if i have to wait 30 mins to get a refil (if its crowded i dont mind). but other than that i leave a 15% tip and if i have a little change i throw it in a tip jar

In the US, it's not really acceptable to not leave a tip. Even if service is poor, you should still leave a small tip, as waiters can be paid less than the minimum wage, with the expectation that tips will make up the difference. Standard tip is 15+% of your bill, pre-tax, excluding alcohol. If service is good, increasing the tip is a good idea. If service is poor, tipping less is customary, though tips below 10% should be reserved for really bad service. No tip should be reserved for only the absolute worst service.

You should always tip, but base the percentage on the service.

I'll generally leave the tip, unless the service I got was terrible and/or the person was a real jerk.

I always give tips because the servers often don't get a high pay. The tips is a way for them to get a pay but even then, it's not always that high. Even if it's the worst restaurant with awful service and lousy food, I'll still give a tip, just not a very large tip.

As long as the waiter is nice, which they usually are, I'll give them a decent tip.

He's right.
I almost always tip between 10% and 25%. It depends on the place where in that range they fall, so for example cabbies rarely get more than 10-15 unless the guy is absolutely hilarious or awesome or otherwise noteworthy (like the cabby we chain smoked with on the way home one night and had an incredibly conversation), while restaurant servers normally get 15-20 unless they're especially good or bad. If they're especially good or bad, the rules are out the window. I've left nothing before, and I've tipped 50% on a multi-hundred dollar bill before.
For stores and fast food places etc., I normally drop stuff below a quarter that's on me. Keeps the pennies out of pocket. :P

I not tip when I go out because there not a tipping culture in Australia as most people get paid a sufficient hourly rate.
A waiter for example may earn $20 per hour so no need for him to get tips.

That $20 Australian Dollar, which is like $1AUD = 90c US.
But tipping is not require in Australia because most people earn enough from their wage.
But for example coffee such as latte will cost you $4.50 here so the tip (wage) is included in the price of everything :-)

It's still more than I make. 17.75 an hour here is pretty good pay. Is that the standard pay, or is that only reserved for high class restaurants?

But people are not forced to tip. Employers are forced to pay their employees when they do their jobs correctly.

Yes and no. There are times when you are forced to tip. (In the US many restaurants charge a mandatory tip on parties of 8 or more.) Also, I define charity as giving something for nothing or a paltry return. Here, you are receiving something rather important (good service).

Tipping, I usually am a very generous tipper, mainly because I know what a difference it makes. I tip where i see a tip jar or wherever I eat. But I have left shitty tip to very expensive dinners because service was horrible! LONG waits on empty nights, subtle snaps that are actually very obvious. Lack of smiling, and looking pissed at the world.
I don't think it's mandatory to tip, I do it based on the service.

The only reason why people tip is because employers in many places are not forced to pay minimum wage.

I aksed a question about tipping on answerbag.com and this was an answer that I got.
I think it's wrong that the tip has become established as a necessity. People deserve to be paid a proper living wage without relying on handouts. Equally wrong is including service charge in the bill automatically. It's a covert tax used to pay staff that should be included in the stated prices on the menu. If service is adequate then leave the established 15%, if it's excellent leave as much as you like (I've tipped 100% before for truely excellent service) and if it's below standard leave 10, 5 or nothing. Nobody should ever feel they must tip somewhere when the service was terrible and the price on the menu should be the price you pay

I tip, always. I worked off of tips and yeah, I tip.
Also, if you are a repeat customer sometimes the quality of your service is based on your usual tipping rate.
