Darrell Robbins, 37, a scientist from the rural town of Old Kirksburg, Pennsylvania, who graduated second in his class at Yale and acquired his doctorate in Biology at MIT, has always been fascinated by the concepts of fantasy and reality.

Darrell has chosen to abandon his family, his wife, Lana, 34, his oldest daughter, Kayla, 10, his youngest daughter, Alicia, 7, and his son, Michael, 4, to test out a machine he has created.

Darrell has worked for PrimalTek Industries for the past seven years. He is the lead scientist in sleep studies. He has created a machine that will let him control an individual's sleep patterns and he has fabricated a drug that can increase lucidity and the feeling of reality within dreams.

He has decided now that his first subject will be himself. He will remain in the machine for one year, while being kept hydrated and receiving nutrients via intravenous fluids. He will essentially be in a comatose state, while his brain patterns will be monitored and the hope is that the drug he has created will allow for him to recall everything he encounters for the entire year's worth of dreaming.

He is going to be monitored by two of his most trusted assistants, Rebecca Lane, 31, and Jessica White, 28.

Flash forward six months... Rebecca Lane has gone missing. Jessica White has been fired from PrimalTek Industries. Darrell remains in his "sleep machine," unmonitored.

Flash forward six more months... PrimalTek Industries has been purchased by multi-billionaire Travis Henderson. He dispatches six of his most trusted employees, deemed "the men in black suits," to check on Robbins' experiment. They change nothing, but continue to monitor Darrell's brain function and maintain his IV fluids.

Flash forward six years... The men in black suits have let Darrell out of his machine. Darrell is unsure of where he is. He is told he is in a PrimalTek lab in upstate New York. He has trouble remembering why he was there. Darrell has lost all sense of time. Reality and his dream world start to blur one into the other. The men in black suits submit Darrell to an MRI and find unusual readings with regards to his brain's functioning, especially in the sector that controls dreams. It appears he is still dreaming, even though he is awake.

Rather than continuing to monitor him in the lab,the men in black suits unleash Darrell on the world. They send him back to his family who he has abandoned for the past seven years. They keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't do anything too irrational.

Upon returning home Darrell discovers his wife has not left him for another man. His family is surprisingly loving upon his return. His wife embraces him and his eldest daughter explains her plans to attend Yale and pursue a career as an author. His younger daughter explains that she's getting straight A's in honors classes in her first year in high school and that she's desperately missed her father for the duration of his absence. His son, Michael, explains that he's joined little league and is a natural born slugger. Despite being gone for seven years, Darrell's family seems to still be in tact. They all seem to not be overwhelmed by his return.

Darrell soon discovers that he cannot tell reality from fantasy. One moment his wife is in tears, chastising him for disappearing for so long, the next she is embracing him, kissing him on the lips and telling him how much she loves him. Upon this unexpected turbulence in his own home, Darrell goes for a walk... He sees a beautiful building, newly erected several streets away. Seconds later the building explodes, erupts into flames and burns to the ground. Darrell shields his eyes, then uncovers them. The building stands there again, perfectly straight, unaffected in any way, shape or form. The men in black suits continue to closely monitor him...

Darrell becomes delusional, but also obsessed with figuring out how to fix his ailment as well as figuring out who has done this to him. Darrell will do whatever it takes and will use whatever friends he has to help him...Be them real or within his own mind...
