does ur school talk about depression in health class? ours doesn't...but they talk about drugs and smoking and how not to do them...but wat about cutting and other SH? it gets just as addicting...my friend jonathan thought of that, and we are gonna lead a movement in our district to go over cutting in class...its not just telling people not to cut or SH but also about y people do it, and handling emotions..and knowing the difference between emo and self harmer. if ur health education doesn't go over it, i think we should all try and make a movement at our own schools to make it a part of our educaton :P

Well my school didn't. (I was in 5th grade) But I think they mentioned mood swings, not necessarily depression. :/

Depression and Suicide were covered. Self Harm wasn't and I dont think it should be either.

This. If self-harm is covered it may lead to an increase in self-harmers. People who are going through a rough time who might not otherwise have considered it will now be tempted.

At my school you take health in 7th grade, then again in high school. (Anywhere from 9-12th grade, depending on when you can fit it in)

7th grade, depression may have been a small unit, I can't really remember. I don't think SH was though.

High school, depression was one of the major units. I'm pretty sure SH was somewhere in there as well, but not very in depth.

No. And I kind of think it's for the best, because if they talked about cutting and suicide and shit I would feel really awkward.

well, self harm has never come up at my school, and in some ways it´s for the best.
If someone see´s the reasons that people do it (it makes them feel better etc.), they might end up doing it themselves, just to see what all the fuss is about, realise it does make them feel better, and then start doing it more and more often.

However, self harm seems to be a bit of a taboo topic, and no one really ever feels comfortable talking about it, which is kind of bad, because it makes those who do SH, feel even more alone. People that never have self harmed seem to only feel comfortable talking about it when they´re taking the piss about it.

I suppose it shouldn´t be as much of a taboo as it is now, but it shouldn´t really be covered in such detail that people realise that it could help them deal with pain. And some people might do it because they realise if the SH, they´ll be able to get help for depression etc. and that would make their problem even worse. If they stick to covering depression, and saying help is there, so people don´t take up cutting for this reason.

I have just finished the our schools unit on grief, but there was nothing on depression on dealing with it yourself or your friends.

I do agree that self harm isn't a great topic to teach because of getting ideas in a students head. But if they do it like the teach sex and contraceptives with not encouraging but preventing.
If it was taught in school the subject would have to be carefully planned out to prevent more self harmers.

Although I do believe depression should be taught where I live it is widely prominent but is not talked about.

my school in freshman yr went over depression...for like one period..and suicide a little basicly what we got out of it was: "Suicide is a PERMANENT solution to a TEMPORARY problem"
we also went over it in theology but most schools dont have that

I think that self harm and mental health should be covered in health classes. I don't think it's a good thing to keep it a secret, because it leaves the people who struggle with it less informed and feeling more alone. People should be taught alternatives to self harm so that they know how to better handle their emotions rather than by cutting or harming themselves in any other way. I almost think there should be a class aside from health that focuses primarily on mental health issues. There's so much that could be covered under the category of mental health, and I don't think kids learn enough about it. I think if people were more educated on mental health and were taught about it as if it were an actual illness then people struggling with mental health problems would feel a lot less alone, and they would know how to better deal with the mental health problem when they first developed it.

our school doesnt teach about self harm but honestly, i think they should. I f they did, it would clear alot of stuff up and help non self harmers understand self harmers, if not properly, a little bit better. But i guess they have their reasons for not teaching it...

I think we'll talk about it in my school. Like about depression and chrisis and that all that can lead up to self harm.

Adding on;

However self harm may not be the best to talk about as it may end up just giving some people ideas.

Just to clarify for the person who -Rep'd me
Not like I have a choice what they teach me...

u no i think i will try to petition the education of self harming to the superintendent of schools cuz there are quite a few people in my school who do cut and a lot more people who do think about it...and everyone else considers the people who are open about it emo..and i think that they shuld teach everyone an outlet for our emotions...cuz they talk about how drugs relieve people's pain and they like the feeling of getting high...and sex and stuff...so y dont they just teach about depression, self harm, and emotions as our mental health unit...the only thing they teach us during our mental health unit is bullying...but they may have a legit reason to not teach it...i'll have to ask my health teacher....and talk to the principle and the superintendent
