Who else here appreciates the ancient systems...I am talking Atari VCS, NES, SNES, Turbografx or even DOS stuff? That is all I play- the newest lineup of gaming is all flash and no substance to me. That, and they are notoriously difficult. It took me 3 years to finish Gradius and at least a few weeks to get past Super Contra. I'm still trying to beat the original TMNT for NES. I'm playing well out of my generation, so the most of you are gonna be at least 15-19 years old.

I'm actually a collector, too. Very anal retentive about EVERYTHING in my game room, most of my cartridges are outfitted with dust covers or at least in a small plastic bag where the labels would not collect dust or wear out plus no dust on the PCB board/game chip. I have played all of the games nobody cared about back in the 8/16 bit era (Aero The Acrobat, Bubsy, Alfred Chicken, Gex, Turrican and oh boy could I go on).

I love the classic consoles and games for them.
In fact, I'm working on getting my NES (It sat for a while.... Sadly) working again so I can play Duck Hunt.
Because let's face it, Duck Hunt is a fucking awesome game.
I've also started playing Zelda again, on my SNES. Don't ask me which one, as I can't remember and I can't be assed to go down 2 flights of stairs to see. :p

Edit: I remembered the name. It's "Zelda: A Link to the Past".

NES systems are generally reliable, but I have seen many that have not been cared for properly. Most of the time, you just need new PIN Connectors (inside of the system, which connects your cartridge to the system in order to play the games). You may need a game-bit tool to get inside of the system, but sometimes certain screwdrivers do the trick. I would reccomend trying to find a top-loader, they're a bit more reliable plus they're small and easy to tote around with you. Duck-Hunt was always great, very fascinating technology for its age. I still cannot believe the pre-rendered graphics of Donkey Kong Country...and from an old Nintendo Power I read it costed 70 dollars at retail! That's more than what most games sell for today, so it was obviously no case of "it's too good to be true"

I know more about the technical specifications of SNES than NES, but I play both nonstop

Love those oldies - I have the feeling that there was more creativity back then.

I don't own any of those "vintage" console - I only played NES/SNES games on emulators. My preference goes to DOS-era PC games, though.

I think I'll go back playing Commander Keen again now :)

Commander Keen was always overlooked. I really want to play the original Amiga version of Alfred Chicken- the NES and SNES conversions just weren't very faithful!

I don't play games that much, but if I'm going to, JRPGs would be my first choice, preferably off the Super Nintendo. Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana are probably my fav JRPGs. Earthbound is also great, same with Final Fantasy III, Secret of Evermore, Soul Blazer and others.

Hell yeah man, I remember Commander Keen!

Earthbound isn't great, it's god-like.
Classic systems are my absolute favorite. Even though I'm only 13, I'm glad how Nintendo hasn't changed much since the 80s.
