Hey, sorry if I posted this in the wrong place but I wasn't quite sure where to go... when in doubt, ask the wise ones!!!!

Pretty simple: why do I have to go to another page on VT to receive PMs? I don't get the notification that I have received a new PM until I have loaded an entirely new page... meaning if I'm waiting for a message and I'm reading some random thread, I won't know when I received the PM until I load a new page... is there something wrong with my computer or is that how the system works? Its just hard to PM and read a thread at the same time... I'll be reading a thread for a couple minutes and then when I go somewhere else I get a PM and end up responding way too long after it was sent :/

yeah I think that's part of the system. you won't get a notification until you reload the page

You could have another window open and just refresh that every couple of minutes to check.

I think a Facebook-type way of sort of pop-up messaging would be nice. Dontcha think so?
And yes, refreshing always helps

ahhh thanks guys. yea I figured it was part of the system. I'll just continue to refresh the page. And yea AliceinChains that would be an awesome idea. *wink wink nudge nudge mods and Admins*

The reason you need to re-load the page to get the notification is because your computer isn't connected to the VT server when nothing is being loaded. So it doesn't know if you've gotten a PM until you load something from the server again (ie. A new page).

And a push notification system, like what you guys are suggesting, isn't really suitable for us. Not because it wouldn't work, but because it would put waaay too much load on our server. And it would be waaay to expensive to upgrade to a nicer server just for one feature.

That's not really true, Ajax or other technologies don't necessarily cause too much server load. That said, VB hasn't done many dynamic things (certainly not in 3.x, but I don't think in 4.x either), and we're definitely not going to be bothered to do it ourselves.
