is there some way you can mass lock all very old threads to prevent people from bumping them?

I know this will be a lot of work, but maybe you should start locking threads that are like over one year old ?

I believe I brought this idea up a long time ago and it was rejected; basic reasoning being that it isn't necessary. Bumped posts are promptly dealt with by moderators, and keeping in mind that bumps by OPs are allowed in most forum areas regardless of thread age, auto-locking all old threads would prevent this from being possible. The only forum area that has had issues with mass bumps is P101, and thus the archives were set up where old threads would be routinely moved over.

but still, there should be some way to remind newbies that they shouldn't bump threads that are like 3 years old

Well, I haven't read the rules in a while, but I'm pretty sure that's mentioned there. ;)

Then that would be why the get warnings infrations, because of carelessness.

They can archive them so people can refer to them for advice or something, but locking them is pointless.

i think locking them is great. what are you talking about? locking them will only not allow people to reply. sooo locking i think is a good go. :)

Archived threads can be locked too. But archiving them will put them in a special forum, and so when people search for things, the content in the archive will come up. But archiving them is probably stupid too, because who really searches for stuff here? Everyone posts the same thread 50 times. IE, size-related questions.

Or, put older threads in a different forum category, for viewing pleasure ONLY.

That's locking them.

Or you could just leave it the way it is, and if an old thread IS bumped, a moderator could do what a moderator does and lock it. It's not that hard. And threads aren't bumped enough for it to be that big of a problem.
