I was looking at indigenous peoples of the pacific area recently, God only know why, and discovered that there is a common plant called Kava which is used in various ceremonies and social particulars.
But found out that it was illegal in Britain, i'm guessing this has something to do with it being a "drug", but looking at chemical composition it is no more dangerous than smoking, healthier even becuase of the lack of preservatives included in cigarettes.
It has been commented that in Aborigine areas of Australia and Indonesia crime and violence is lower when Kava has been legal, althought this has some argumental evidence against it.
Another argument for it is that in scientific studies it is shown to be safe whilst driving, although only in low concentrations and is has been called better than caffiene and alcohol as a recreational legal drug because it relaxes you and doesn't "hype" you up or make you paranoid like high doses of the other two.
