Somebody please explain to me why people like coffee. It tastes horrible to me, what makes it so "addicting"?

I've never understood people's obsessions with the stuff.

I love coffee, some is much nicer than others though. Its like lots of other things, first time you try it you wonder why anyone ever drinks the stuff, but once you get used to it its a different story.

I'm not that big on coffee. But my mom bought me this cinnamon blend, with this like... caramel creamer? It's the only kind I like. I don't drink it regularly though, because I don't want to discolor my teeth.

I usually just prefer chai tea lattes. :)

Well I do drink a hell of a lot of Coke, but coffee tastes so bitter compared to it. I guess the same goes for tea.

It's the caffeine in both of them. Coke is carbonated, coffee is not. Some like it some don't.

Because caffeine is legal. If they illegalized caffeine, it wouldn't make any sense.

I like it. But I only like it if it has tons of Sweet N Low in it or french vanilla creamer. But I rarely drink coffee because it gives me migranes.

I am not addicted but according to everyone else, its quite easy.

First off, I don't think you have tasted coffee that has been dressed up to taste good. I used to be really put off by coffee but then I discovered flavored creamer, sugar, milk, and all that other stuff that you put in it to make it taste awesome!

So I say just take a trip to Starbucks and ask for somethign like that.

I used to have a redbull everyday until i started feeling paranoid and jittery. It was terrible. I thought I was tripping on some Krusty the clown shit. So I just stick to coffee and a redbull every once in a while.

I don't know either. I really like the way it smells, but every time I drink it it tastes horrible. I tell myself I'm not gonna drink it again, but most times I smell it and I'm like "It smells sooo good, maybe this time it'll taste different :D". Alas, it never does... :[

If you have a Starbucks near you, start yourself on a Caramel Frappucinno. Then go to mocha, then plain, then a latte, until you enjoy the taste of plain coffee instead of "frou frou" coffee as my husband calls it. My first coffee was shit, it was a sip of my mum's, just creamer. But after a couple Mocha Frappucinnos, I learned to love it. Now, I actually enjoy the taste of coffee, and can't stand a lot of Starbuck's sweeter coffees. And a then coffee-hater now works at Starbucks :P

I can't live without coffee, Coffee contains a large amount of caffeine that's why it's so addictive. It may be the stimulation one receives you know that burst of fast energy that coffee gives you after you wake up. After all a cup of coffee has been called a cup of ambition.

Just about evey work morning I go to the Starbucks that's at my work and usually order a tall white chocolate mocha. It taste quite good. In the spring and summer, I'll order a tall Java Chip (choclate chips) frap. It's sooo refreshing.

Agreed. Once you get used to it it turns into a habit. Like, my dad tried a cigarette when he was in college, and he said it was Discusting...but tons of people are hooked on it. :P

Not like coffee can damage your body or anything like cigs can. xD

Coffee stains your teeth and can give some people horrible stomach aches. When made wrong, it can be disgusting and turn you off from ever touching the stuff again (if it's your first time drinking it.)

I personally need coffee every morning. It has become one of the things I MUST do or else my day will be bad (but that's a personal mental addiction).

I drink it black, with three spoons of sugar. Have you ever had coffee made from vending machines in like, a hospital or in those Self-Serve Rest Stops when you're in the middle of no where? It OWNS.

I absolutely love coffee. I find it addicting because it has such an intoxicating smell and full flavor. However I cannot drink black coffee. Way too bitter. I love mocha, caramel, or vanilla coffees. But mostly I get Frappuccinos from Starbucks. That place is like my home away from home. :)

Addictions are strange things in my view. Why do we get addicted? Well I suppose the best answer I have is we find something pleasureable and when our brains learn that its "good" and we've made a habit of it it becomes more normal. Then it becomes harder to stop, then afterwards it becomes a habit, and lastly develops into an addiction. Maybe for cofee is the energy it provides.

I cant live without coffee..

I too used to hate it.. but tried it one day and im now addicted.
To be honest my love for coffee is very bad, the caffiene in it gives me an energy boost and sometimes i replace my meals with it. I have been know to get through about 18 mugs a day.. im now only on 8 a day. :P

I quite like coffee now but I used to hate the taste of it :) As for the addictive part, I think it's the caffeine part which gets people addicted! I never have much coffee but if you drink too much of it is supposed to really give you a buzz. I'm not addicted though ;) But I like it on a early winter morning when I haven't had much sleep.

i think coffee is one of the best things invented! I don't know if many of you have heard of the gas station 'Sheetz', but they have the best coffee ever. From regular plain jane coffee to Double caramel chocolate mocha's with sprinkles they have it all. To some people the taste is captivating, to others it's just horrible. I'm not personally addicted, but i know i would get caffeine head-aches if i quick immediately...

Everyone has different taste buds, you know that. You could have easily answered your own question. It tastes good to many and is often revitalizing. And to those who it does taste good to (and/or helps awaken them) it often becomes addicting.

I can't stand bitter things so coffee has to be really sweet... the French vanilla I get at Tim Hortons is really sweet. However, I don't have it often so I don't understand the addiction part.

Well for everyone it's different. Caffeine is a stimulant and stimulates people's senses. Some in a good way, some in a bad way. I like coffee but I don't drink it much. I like tea more. It's all a matter of preference, really. To you coffee may taste horrible and to another it may be the best thing in the world. I personally hate seafood...my mother, on the other hand, loves it!
