I used to do it out of depression. Would that be considered self harm?

Was your aim to hurt your body?
In my experience people who drink because of depression are self-medicating. IMO, I wouldn't consider it self harm. There are a number of similarities though.

I think self harm is physically (sp?) hurting your self, but i also think drinking too much, smoking alot and taking too much pills beacause your still hurting yourself in a way.

Well, like a lot of people who cut it kind of relieves you to drink and do drugs. That's why I would do it and since it's so harmful to your body in the longterm I wasn't sure if it should be considered a branch of self-harm.

Drugs/alcohol and eating disorders can both be consitered self harm in some respect.
but generally they're treated differently than selfharm. it's got the same end result though

depends on your reasons, causing deliberate harm to yourself is self harm.
but at the end of the day, it ends the same way.
your attracted to both those things while depressed because they make you feel better,
so i guess it's down to what you think yourself.
either way, it's not healthy.

They are defintely classed as self harm because I had this covo with my counsellor. She said smoking, drinking or drug use is self harm.
it made me feel better about my cutting.
Take care
