View Full Version : PM limit warning

we need a big pop up to new members saying the pm limit is 100, and explain why that is. I am so sick and tired of new members asking why, and they dont bother to check the other threads made about it.

If that cant be done, maybe an announcment at the top of every forum, and stickies in the VT HQ.

This is a really good idea. People posting the question, when if they look two threads down theres the same question gets kind of old.

People are still going to post about it anyway.

Lol, like stickies would work...

I was thinking when you first made an account, it should be like "boom, in yo' face!" type kinda thing.

There was an announcement, didn't work cause they really don't give a shit about reading. I know that it could happen in the way that as soon as you sign up the rules pop up, and you have to read them. So, I think it can be done, whether or not it's gonna happen is another story

You guys mean Public message or private message?
And why there is a limit, I still have many years here and there will be a limit ?

Bougainvillea
August 7th, 2010, 03:04 AM
Private message. The post limit implementation is to keep people from joining solely for the purpose of soliciting others members for nude webcam interactions and sending nude pictures. It's helped staff tremendously. Because there is a legal issue with things like that. It's just to ensure you're here for the main purpose of VT, and be involved with the active community.

But as it was said above there are some people that won't bother reading and will still post anyway

I don't think there are such people here ( except some 25 year old will come and to things here )
Why don't you just ban them?

You'd be surprised, there are a lot of people like that here, most of the time everything is deleted before members see it because of all the moderation that goes on. Pms though require reporting, and not many do that so that why the requirement is so high to stop it getting to that stage

Azunite
August 7th, 2010, 03:38 AM
Oh and I also see that it says "This msg has been moderated". Like moderators read this or if there are words such as "sex, cam etc." the message is auto. deleted?

Kaius
August 7th, 2010, 03:39 AM
Moderators watch every visitor message that goes through. Anything asking for contact details, webcam, or anything like that is instatly deleted and a warning/infraction or in some severe cases a ban will be issued.

Azunite
August 7th, 2010, 03:45 AM
But the message is posted within miliseconds and it says on top " tested by mod " lol how quick you are ?

Kaius
August 7th, 2010, 03:53 AM
"Tested by mod" Doesn't ever come up. its usually "This message is moderated". It depends how busy we are at one moment. We can't deal with everything else and check them at the same time.

Harley Quinn
August 7th, 2010, 03:53 AM
It comes up as a notification for a mod and then they approve so it can range depending on when they see the notification

Azunite
August 7th, 2010, 03:55 AM
Oh okay, so you guys ARE busy lol.

Back to the original suggestion...
I think that a pop-up for every new member would be a good idea. Obviously it wouldn't stop all the threads about it but hopefully it would reduce them.

I agree there should be a pop up for new members

or maybe there should be a

I know and understand that the PM limit is 100

and they have to check the box next to that, otherwise they can't register, it's required

I very much doubt that that would work. I mean, whenever I install something it tells me to read the terms and conditions then to check a box like that. I never do, I just click it and install.

See what I mean?

Absolutely right, nobody actually reads that crap.

I would suggest sending an automated "Welcome to VT" email. I would include the main rules from the FAQ and also a statement that certain facilities will become available when you have established your status on the board.

The same thing will no doubt apply, they may not read the email, but all the same I think an email is more likely to be read than a pop up box and is probably easier to implement.

Giles
August 7th, 2010, 03:40 PM
To be honest Nick, If I'm to be taken as an example for the average member, nobody will read that either. If I've just signed up for any website and they send me a 'welcome' email, I just delete it straight away.

Just being blunt...

Pm warning? naah
how about entire site warning, A nice email saying the rules with a title that basicly says that the email will be the only warning that theyll get
then theres no excuse for breaking the rules since they were sent them, and its their fault for not reading them

ohhh you're right.

Dang.

Maybe there can be a one question quiz to see if they know what the limit afterwards? :S

probably there is a database which the post is run by. in the database are words that, if they are in a message, the message will be deleted. a sort of "pre-moderation", if it were.

There are EASY ways around like that. Such as spacing out words, etc

no, you have to have 100 posts before you can send PM's. Its like that because a high percentage of users have been targeted by people wanting to cam, or perform sexual acts.

This is why i want something like a warning or a pop up, or quiz or whatever, many new members dont know. Hell, maybe when they try to send PM's they get a pop up explaing why. something like "You need 100 posts before you may send PM's. This is because many members where abusing the system by asking for innapropriate things, e.g Camming."

I understand why it is and yes im glad the limit is 100. But i clicked on "private messages" under my name, and it says that have however many i have, out of "1,000 allowed." Did it not change on mine or something like that? And i made sure it said 1000 :P

That's how many can be stored. 1,000 is the limit and then they're deleted from your inbox/outbox for room. It's not a limit.

Or... VT can nominate people for a welcome team, and those in charge would be assigned to be a newbie's "personal aid" for the first month of being new, and there job would be to welcome the newcomer, and send them a PM or VM basically stating the rules and such.

I also think the Pop-up/ sticky would be a good idea.

Actually, I would.
It wouldn't be that hard.
All the Admin would have to do is send the welcome person a list of newcomers via email. Then the rest would be in the hands of the Welcoming Committee.

Giles
August 11th, 2010, 06:15 PM
Well it would have to be trusted members that know enough about the site to provide honest and helpful advice, for it to be effective there would have to be loads of them. Considering how many new members there are (rough number... mods?).

I don't see it happening due to a lack of people willing to do it and the general hassle. Personally I can see people getting way ahead of themselves given the chance.

I've been here for a very long time.... and, like I said. People and/or the Admin would nominate trustworthy people. It could be fun, if you made it fun.

You guys realize that the board can send out automated PMs/EMails to newly registered users, right?
Meaning, the board could be the 'welcoming comitee'. No need to 'hire' or 'appoint' people to a position of basically PM spamming the hell out of new commers.

itd prolly be best if the pm thing was completely invisible...but that cant happen since they still can pm staff
