When I am stressed I apply some damage to myself like tearing or biting off my dead skin from my fingers but cutting yourself?
Hitting a wrong place ( come on people artery isn't located only in your wrist )may cause severe bleeding or severe pain. And when people look at you they may think "Hey where's ma straitjacket?"
I am not saying, of course, you people are crazy but why cut yourself?

Unless you cut for yourself it is pointless trying to explain.
It's like a drug addict knowing his addiction is ruining his life and still been unable to stop.
No one else can understand why he would continue to do it but him.
There are a hundred different reasons why a person may turn to cutting and not one of them can ever have claimed to help the problem at the souce.
It's just a way to help escape.
It just puts off the problem for an even longer period of time and then you find yourself addicted.
It's vicious and ugly and lonely.
We do not do it for fun.
But you would never understand.

well most people cut as a stress reliever....and to help cope with whats going on in thier lives atm. think of it this way. they cut and feel pain on the outside. so they can ignore the pain on the inside.
the brain works like a tube when it comes to pain....only one sence of pain can come in at a time so its usually the most intence pain. so its to dull the pain
but thats only y some people cut. others cut so they can feel pain. because there so deep in depression that they cant feel anything and so they cut to acually feel something.
but these are just the most common reasons. it all depends on the person. it could be something totally diffrent for them
the bottom line is most people cut because they feel they need it. and while this is as far from the truth as it can be, it is a serious problem and the people who do it do in fact need help.

Well, everyone does it for different reasons:
To relieve emotional pain, stress or tension, the physical pain seems to numb the emotional for some.
To make them feel something at all, because some people feel emotionally numb, so they cut, or burn or self harm in some way to make them feel something and let them know they're alive.
Some do it because the like seeing themselves bleed, it might seem weird to someone who's never done it, but it happens...
Some do it because the scars make them feel safe, like no one can hurt them as much as they can hurt themselves.
And in a lot of cases, they can get addicted, and feel like they need to do it, because the get addicted to the feeling they get during and a few minutes after, because physical pain releases endorphines, and they get addicted to the way this makes them feel.
Sometimes, people do it for attention, however this is very rare, and it hardly ever happens, so please don't assume that everyone who self harms is an attention seeker, because they aren't. So many people hide it from everyone else, and the last thing most people want is attention from it.
If you have any questions, feel free to VM me and ask, i'll try and help you understand if you want, but its hard to do unless you've been there yourself... And i can garuntee you, you don't want that.

Most people who don't cut won't understand, but...really, georgia summed up my answer....
Alot of people don't know why they cut, they're just addicted...If you do talk to self harmers, i advise you think about what your saying, you wouldn't want to risk causing them further harm...would you?

When I am stressed, I tear off my skin for several months now by my hand or by tearing it with my teeth. When i go into a pool or get out of shower, ( well I dont know what you call it in English, your skin gets like an old man ) and my skin around my fingers looks like someone slashed it with a sword. WHen my friends see it, they kinda get scared and avoid touching my hands and my dad is also terrified, ( Dont bother thinking my mum because she is as ignorant as a butterfly). I guess everbody hurts him/herself in some way....Only thing which makes me forget my internal conflict is to throw things around, so I have many broken pencils around in my room.

Many have stated a lot of reasons why people cut themselves so I'm not going to repeat it. When a person cuts themselves, the brain releases endorphins which provide a temporary sense of relief and well-being. With it only being temporary or until the person feels the way they did previously, they will want that sense of relief and the brain will crave for the release as well and -more than likely- they will do it again. It's one of the reasons why it's just a compulsive behavior. I do not know what this is like so I can't vouch for this but it's psychology and understanding people.

As all the other have said people do it for may different reasons, it gets into an addiction, which, like most addictions, is very hard to break or stop.
Its very hard to explain and understand if your explaining it to someone who doesnt cut.
My personal reason why is to punish myself if i mess something up .
Hope this helps you a bit

Well ı agree with kayla, but you people have good reasons to cut yourself
I have few questions
What do you cut yourself with
Don't you fear you will get an infections
Does it bleed a lot?
How come people don't see your scars?

after a while, anything becomes a cutting tool, even things that aren't sharp at all. People do it with a lot of things. Some people don't even cut themselves. Some people burn themselves, punch themselves, hit their head against a wall, or anything that can cause them physical pain. So anything can be used to self harm. But most people have a favourite tool to self harm with, and it is a good idea to stay away from that, so they don't feel as tempted.
To be honest, i think most people do worry a little about getting an infection, but at the time, i don't think many people actually care, they just need the feeling. They regret it afterwards, and i think that's when they worry about infection, i know i did.
And it depends how deep you cut as to whether it bleeds a lot. Personally, i tried to keep the bleeding to a minimum, but some people might like seeing themselves bleed.
People don't see scars because people who self harm tend to hide them, because they don't want people to see the scars. They're afraid of how people will react, so they cover up their scars.
Hope this helped a little, PM me if you have any other questions :)

How come people don't see your scars? I cut myself with anything i can get my hands on. Pencils, small scissors, rough walls, my nails, anything. I've started to just hit myself sometimes. People will hurt themselves in any way possible.
Sometimes I fear infection, though it's usually sometime after the incident, during the situation, I'm not usually thinking about anything except how i can hurt myself.
Depends how deep you cut or want to cut. I usually cut pretty shallowly, but sometimes it bleeds a bit, more usually if i pick at the scabs.
People sometimes do. I usually explain them away pretty well, and I'm VERY bad at lying, but people are usually none the wiser. You see, in their eyes, I'm an extremely happy person and am "too smart to ever hurt myself" (one of my friends told me that, i was surprised). I cut where nobody will see, i wear long sleeves. It's not much fun, feeling like you have to hide something from everyone else.

The physical pain of the cut and the sight of alle the blood temporarily takes the mind off the emotional and mental pain... Simple really - Just don't start.

I suppose it depends on the person, but for me it became a massive stress release and distraction from my mental pain.
The first time I cut I was sitting alone crying my eyes out, mind on fire, felt like tearing my heart out, and I needed something to distract from my pain. The singe of the cut and the mess the blood made gave my mind something else to focus on. It takes my thoughts away from my situation and made me focus on the fact that I'm bleeding, and I need to clean it up.
Arg, it's very hard to explain.
In the same way people smoke, or take a drink, or smash things up when they're upset, I cut. It's just a more extreme stress reliever for more extreme sitatuations.
It's very hard to understand if you're not a cutter I suppose.
