I jumped with excitement when I saw this....I'm wanting to study technical theatre in 2011.

Theres 2 places I've seen in the UK doing it, RADA and RSAMD...both very competitive.

Best of luck to you, might end up working together in the future :P

Well I don't know anywhere in the UK that could help :P But I too want to go study technical theatre in college (already am in high school) There's two in state collages in my state that have great programs.

PS: Tech is a lot of work too. Don't think it's just something anyone can be great at. It ruins your schedule, takes your life, and takes a lot of effort.

Agreed, every time I work in a show I disappear completley online cause my daily routine changes from:

Get up
School
Go home and go online
go to bed

to:

Get up
Go to school
Rush to the theatre
go home
have food
go to bed

It is so rewarding though :)

My schedule during the school year normally is:

Get up
School
After-school tech
Go home and online

Or during a show run:

Get up
School
Rehearsal/show
get home 11PM
sleep

SO WORTH IT :D

I love tech theatre. I was really into it last school year, travelled an hour once a week to go to a bigger theatre to learn new stuff. As I am currently moving I hope they have a tech club there.

My TD and I were talking, thinking what it'd be like if we were the actors and actors were the stagehands...

We'd embarrass ourselves, they'd end up killing someone. lol. Being a stagehand puts a lot of weight on your shoulders, and expect to be treated like shit by actors. None of them really know what you go through to make THEM look good.

HEY!

Some of us do. (Especially when we've been drafted to help the stage crew in every single production we've ever done. :P ) I love you techies. I've done a few shows where the cast is the tech crew completely. It was hell. Without you guys, there'd be no show.

Yep it goes with the name stage crew.

It's mainly because we have a higher authority than them when it comes to what goes on backstage. Well thats the case in the productions I work in.

K, there's 1% of actors who do know what we go through.

True. Don't worry, when I see some n00b disrespecting stage crew, I slap them upside the head. Who knows? Maybe one day more actors will take notice.

for the stage crew I work for, if you become part of the cast, your not welcome back...its taken light heartedly but it gives you an insight into what cast mean to us :P

Ive managed the stage at my old school for about 3 years, its good fun and good practice for later life

i recommend it. Just be aware that some nobs decide its your fault if something beyond you control shuts down or breaks and think its a fun idea to boo you :)

Here's a little something all us theatre people can relate to:

You’ve said countless times, “I can’t. I have rehearsal.”
Anyone who says Macbeth has a death wish.
You realize theater is your social life and you don’t have any friends outside of theater.
You want to shoot people who think putting on a production is easy.
Stress is a way of life.
Once the production is over you don't know what to do with your time.
You think your director is the coolest guy ever.
You think your director is an idiot.
You love going to see other productions just to compare them to yours.
You argue with your director about which play to do next.
Homework? Never heard of it.
You could easily set up a cot and live in the theater. You’re there all the time anyway.
You dread the thought of having rehearsal, but the second you get there you don’t want to leave.
You meet someone from another theater and instantly become best friends.
You are a techie and want to strangle the actors because you have their lines memorized better than they do.
Sleep? What is sleep?
Techies and actors don't understand each other, but they pretend that they do.
There's more drama backstage than there is onstage.
Actors and techies argue about who has more work.
You're on your deathbed and miss school, but you somehow manage to go to rehearsal.
You quote lines from previous plays you've done when you have casual conversations with friends.
You suddenly realize that your entire wardrobe is black.
You know what spiking is, and it's not what you do to hair.
You've been working with the same people so long that you have blackmail to last a lifetime.
You've been injured so many times it's a miracle you're still alive.
Applause after a show is the best sound ever.
Modesty is long forgotten.
People who aren't in theater just aren't cool.

That is the most amazing thing I read in all of that because to me there isnt any drama ackstage between our crew and actors because our stage managers Bev & Ashley wouldn't let they have always been kind to us, our prop lady brought us cake on our last day of our last show and because it was my last show with that group it said goodbye, we'll never forget you with mine and the two other lads names on who were leaving... thats when the tears started!

I can't really offer you any advice on what school to choose since im from the US, but I do wish you the best of luck! Theater is amazing and as always been an important (and my favorite) thing in my life though as I have continued to develop my acting career ive decided that I would rather focus on film acting. Either or I know its a tough road, but in my opinon the most rewarding :)

Love those rules so much that I've printed off 10 copies of it and put it in the dressing rooms/wings of the production I'm working in :)
