Well, because usually we are nerds and/or geeks.

I mean, I'll admit it. I'm a nerd, and damn proud of it too.
And I'm not too sure on where you live, but around here, people with computer smarts are /highly/ respected.

(Am I feeling too lazy to type out something more 'wordy'? Yes, yes I am. :p )

It's mostly just a stereotype really. If you're into working on computers then you're always a nerd or a geek. I've always been good with computer programming and things, though really i've always just put that down to either my autism or my dyslexia because its something i've always excelled in instead of things like english or maths. Though sport is something i'm quite keen on as well and that is something that doesn't fit in with the stereotype of being a nerd or a geek, so really just because one of your interests is computing and things, doesn't necessarily always mean you're a nerd or a geek, its just another stupid stereotype.

I have a nice gift for you:

Contrary to popular myth, you don't have to be a nerd to be a hacker. It does help, however, and many hackers are in fact nerds. Being something of a social outcast helps you stay concentrated on the really important things, like thinking and hacking.

For this reason, many hackers have adopted the label ‘geek’ as a badge of pride — it's a way of declaring their independence from normal social expectations (as well as a fondness for other things like science fiction and strategy games that often go with being a hacker). The term 'nerd' used to be used this way back in the 1990s, back when 'nerd' was a mild pejorative and 'geek' a rather harsher one; sometime after 2000 they switched places, at least in U.S. popular culture, and there is now even a significant geek-pride culture among people who aren't techies.

If you can manage to concentrate enough on hacking to be good at it and still have a life, that's fine. This is a lot easier today than it was when I was a newbie in the 1970s; mainstream culture is much friendlier to techno-nerds now. There are even growing numbers of people who realize that hackers are often high-quality lover and spouse material.

If you're attracted to hacking because you don't have a life, that's OK too — at least you won't have trouble concentrating. Maybe you'll get a life later on.

Games are not solely built by Programmers. There are horrendous number of designers who actually engage in the making of the game, 3 to 8 designers. They sketch out the game; they visualize the characters; make a 3D version of the character, and this is the longest period; building the environment, and make use of the Game Engine's physics. They don't use the standard, albeit expensive, Gaming GFX Card, they use what you call as "Workstation" GPUs, not only that! they also use extra "phsx" accessory cards(PPU).

Here comes the role of specific programmers, otherwise known as Desktop Programmers. They make the programs of how the game is played, how the game interacts with player, how it uses the engine in a specific manner, and how it progress events and scenes and so on. Usually 2 to 5 programmers work. Almost forget to mention this: programmers must know how to 3D model things also.

If someone finishes their work, other will come and continue where they left off. And you have the Marketing stuff, that's non of our concern now, is it?

thats what i wanna do... the sketches. the programming part isnt the fun part in my eyes but creating what they want is probably hard...

take the game dead space they had to create something that ripped apart a humans internal organs to adapt to the environment in space. The necromorphs used the human ribs to create claws...

i know about all that stuff, faris but spared the details with the designers but you are right w/o them what would the programmers do?

If you want designing, there are ample of courses in designing in almost every college; from Hand sketching to 3D modelling. Learning basic programming and computer science is an invaluable asset, though. Same goes for programmers, they also need to know basic things in design.

I really care less for the game making of today. They have all the niceties now, it wasn't like back then.

Early game designers were just pixel artist. Even though so, they also sketched their ideas and also made some awesome cover art.

Huh, I forget the mention the Musicians. If you are a Multi instrumental, and know how to make music from the computer as well, you will have a bright future in the gaming industry.

They call programmers geeks or nerds because they usually all think about their lovely pc.
I am a succesful mod maker for Oblivion, Fallout and Mount and Blade myself and nobody calls me a nerd lol.
It is a matter of opinion, unless these programmers aren't upset about it, there is no problem what people think.
