I was thinking.
Why not add an IMing system?
On the site VampireFreaks.com, if a members is online, it'll display a little link that says IM This User. When you click it, it opens a small new window and allows you to IM that member. I think it'd be a good idea for this site, though it'd have to have a post limit.

Though there would be a post limit there is still the "supervision" factor where it would end up just like PMing. Though it's a good idea it's just so much easier to talk to the person via PM or VM and get to know them.

Edit: Also if you want people to have your IM then you could put it in your contact info on your profile.

Yeah, but some don't want their IM info out there for privacy reasons.
A report button could be added, or something of the like?

it's a really good idea. I would use it..
But i also assume moderating would be extremely hard.

No, just no. I'm sorry, we couldn't moderate this.
VampireFreaks is more like facebook.

By "we" you mean "they".

Not only that, wouldn't it cost money? I'm sure administration is pretty strapped as it is. I'm not entirely sure though.

This is why we have a chat room and PM and VM. I don't think that we need any more than that.

...and the shoutbox too. Agree totally, we dont need anymore and this suggestion is going to come under the "this is a help forum not a social networking site" category.

Tbh I think Ronnie pretty much nailed it, we have PM's, VM's, and the Chat room as it is. We still have to take into consideration this isn't a social networking site, so it shouldn't be used like one. Whether the IM feature would be used for that purpose or not there are always going to be people that abuse it. Probably more abuse than good use will come out of it.

As soon as I saw the title, i saw where this was going, and to be honest that`s just over doing it.

We don`t need any MORE communication methods than we already have, and yes this isn`t a social networking site. That kind of stuff just isn`t necessary.

and the amount of rule breaking that could go undetected, it just seems pointless, and more troublesome.

we don't really need it...we have PM, VM, and the chatroom...

i like this idea in theory. but unfortunately it just isn't practical for various reasons that the posters above me have already mentioned.

Besides, If that IM opened a popup, and someone was IMing you, how annoying would it be to have a dozen or so popups floating around? I'd hate it, and so would others. And of course, the moderation that will be needed.

you do realize that first part is no different from all other IM services so dealing with it here or there it wouldn't be different. Anyways the modding of that would be hell it's the main reason we don't allow private chats in the chatroom anymore because it was heavily used for rule breaking.
