okay I don't know how to explain this. but of course everyone should have equal rights. but I read some posts saying everyone should be equal

during school we read this short story (I forgot the name). it was in the future, where EVERYONE was equal. so pretty much anyone smarter was forced to wear something that prevented them from becoming smarter than everyone else. so then everyone will have the same amount of intelligence

also, those that are more beautiful have to wear masks. those that are stronger have to wear things so they won't be stronger than others.

Everyone was equal, no one was stronger, no one was more beautiful or handsome, no one was smarter.

and near the ending was very sad. I don't want to spoil the ending but it was very sad

Of course, this is a fictional story but when we read it I was all for equality but after this story I thought that it might not be so good after all

I don't know how this will turn into a debate....but I just wanted to let this all out....:/

Equality is just like a white, 4 sided room.

Think about it. If everyone was rich, intelligent, apt and have equal worth of Job opportunities. Then that's where "Utopia of equality" fails.

The only cure for this is the antithesis of equality, 'Diversity'. Without this, the world would have been fallen a victim to chaos and utter disorder.

That's where diversity comes into play. It is useless to make everyone satisfied to the maximum level. That's the only price to pay.

People are not equal, no, but I think everyone who says all people are equal actually mean that we all deserve the same rights. I might be wrong, but that's what I've meant any time I've used that phrase. Some people have more advantages over others, inherit more money, develop special skills, have a smarter mind or a stronger body. If you don't have an advantage, that sucks, but that's life for you.

I am for legal equality, not social equality. Everyone deserves the same legal rights, equal protection from discrimination, and all those sorts of things. Trying to make everyone equally intelligent or attractive or strong goes into the realm of utopian hell, and, to a lesser degree, communism.

It is unfortunate. This is a thing that would be almost impossible to achieve.

If you have seen the first post(the story), everyone went on to the extreme to avoid "discrimination". But that's one fallible method.

You ever heard of the "Cast" system?

That's "Caste", and yes, it's used in India. Horribly divisive social hierarchy.

Oh, how did I missed that tiny "e". Mind not.

So, you think that we all should have "legal" equality. Don't you think that it is leading to "social" equality.

That's a slippery slope fallacy. There's nothing to suggest having legal equality will lead to social equality.

I don't legal equality will truely lead to social equality. Perhaps you'll have the extremest (as you have in every arguement) but they will just rant and ramble. Social equality will be extremely trauatizing seeing as how you can't even say that you're you. Everyone is the exact same. I would kill myself.

No. Quite the opposite. Having Legal equality would lead to social inequality.

For example:
Guns are allowed for Citizen but not for expatriates and residents.

Here, we have legal equality for the citizens, but not for the expatriates, so there is a social inequality.

I think I have jumbled the concepts. Correct me if I am wrong somehow.

That's not a social inequality. A social inequality would be something like your appearance, height, weight, intelligence, things like those listed by the OP.

That's absurd. I am done with that. :what:

Let us not to throw out legal equality from our discussion.

Wouldn't that only be applied to some societies. Some are still adherent to their own philosophical view on equality.

Do you not think so?

I don't believe in equality, but I do believe in fairness!

Jess, that story you read was entitled "Harrison Bergeron". I know, because I read it also. As for equality, it is flawed. Everyone is unique, and that would be destroyed if everyone was equal. Fairness, on the other hand, is better, because people are granted the same rights and opporotunities.

I don't believe in equality, but I do believe in fairness!

Fairness is the most over used, meaningless and pointless political cliche that I had every heard.

I don't believe in equality, I don't think it is healthy for everyone to be equal, for example a doctor and a bus driver are not equal and should not be payed the same. I would go as far as to say that nobody geniuenly believes in equality.

i dont think they should be forced to under-use their brain. if they use more of their brain than everyone else, they'll just get dumber, and i know thats more equal, but its unfair to the person. and what about mentally challenged people? we have to act like them or they have to act like us? i dont think its possible for them to act like us, they cant control their condition.

if beautiful people have to wear masks, it might send a signal that they're ugly, and they'll have to go to therapy or something, and thats not fair. we cant control what we look like and how smart we are, and we should use those advantages to show we're individuals. the last thing i want is for humans to be robots with no say in what they wanna do with their life: no dumb person can be a doctor. there are different intelligences, and not all people can have the same intelligence level.

i just think people should be more equal, not equal, like men and women should get the same pay for the same job, and stuff like that.

i agree, if equality existed people wouldnt be made fun of and alot of things in history wouldve never happened... Even if equality doesnt exist people should treat everyone equally like family or friends
