How would you know - you're asleep. You might wake up with an erection, that's normal, gets called "morning wood", but it doenst mean its been there all night.

getting a boner is part of the sleep cycle because there are points in your sleep period that you get really aroused

Nope, when you are sleeping, you enter different stages of sleep; when you enter your deep stage of sleep, you get erections. Completly normal, I think every guy get it even when there sleeping, its like breathing, its controlable to a certon extent. As for why it happens, I really dont have a clue. I could guess and say that its like a defence system to keep your body working whyle you sleep, but I dont know.. Hope I helped a little.
