I read lady gagas rolling stone interview. I must say lady gaga is one of the most intelligent people to ever go through hollywood.
Im only a little sad in her, because i thought i was watching her get better as an artist through the past Year, but the truth is she made herself look pretty and she started with unintelligent music so record dealers pick her up, and the world accepts her.
Lady Gaga- "If i started how i am now nobody would listen to me."
"Its almost as if you have to trick or seduce people to listen to intelligent music"
I think she started with The Fame look so people would listen to her, and now that everyone is going to hear her she is slowly going to make her music more intelligent so its almost getting tricked into people.
Lady Gaga knows how to run her shit.
And for the record she has:
She has a couple Grammys
The Fame is 3X Platinum in the US alone
Fame Monster is 1X Platinum in the US
The Fame was certified Diamond in February for worldwide sales of 10 million.
So considering shes been famous for...literally a year and a half maybe, this is a great accomplishment.
If I were her, I would be putting out albums every year to remain in the spotlight

She's put two albums out with a third coming out this year I think.
It still isn't news. Music news, not serious news.

I know, but I mean she's never won that honor. I think she's got her own flair and shes Lady GaGa. Take some in small doses.

>,>. The real deal doesn't go to diamond....... If they did bands like Rush, Led Zep, The Who, Stevie wonder/vaughn, Yes, Zappa, The Beatles, Aerosmith, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, Frampton, The Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Steely dan. Would have won numerous "Diamond" albums.

Diamond means she sold atleast ten million copies of the album which she did. They may have went diamond.

I'm uncertain on it, I'm no master. I think lady GaGa has done well. She actually suprised me, because I never really thought she'd get so high. I feel like she's made some changes to the genre, but I'm not a huge fan.

I'd like to just take a moment and explain you something that I've been trying to withhold.
Most, if not ALL, of the artists Greg listed are more famous than Gaga. Think of it.
Rush
Led Zeppelin
The Who
Stevie Wonder
Yes
Frank Zappa
The Beatles
Aerosmith
Bob Marley
Pink Floyd
Peter Frampton
The Rolling Stones
Radiohead
Steely Dan
Do you have any IDEA how LONG these artists careers have been? Gaga has been in the limelight for how long now? 2 or 3 years? Again, most if not all the above artists, have been in the business working for over 30+ years. They've sold far more records, MADE far more records, gotten FAR more awards than Gaga, and have certainly made a bigger name for themselves. Greg isn't "in denial", he's simply stating that Gaga is not as big as people put her up to be.

Of corse those are bigtime bands, but only some are more famous than gaga.
The genration has moved on. Theres more people who lived through Gaga than there was to be alive while MOST of those bands were out.
They all had their time. Now its Gagas time. 10 years she will be replaced. But she will be remembered. Just like the bands.
Also this is an appreciation thread. Plz try to keep it nice (:

Honestly, some of those bands I have never even heard of...and School of Rock has taught me well (lol JK).
Lady Gaga has acheived a level of greatness within like a year of being famous.
You argue that these peoples careers have lasted for so long but you didn't mention how they probably didn't get to the level that she is at now for about 10 years.
Think about where she can be 10 years from now if she plays her cards right.
Lady Gaga is a force to be reckoned with and I can only see her getting better. I think that she will end up being one of the most prolific artists of our generation and hold a shit ton of records...similar to Mariah

In that case why is it in the Chronicle? If it's an appreciation thread, it should be in Music. Either way, he was nice. He was just pointing out the fact that Gaga hasn't achieved the status of those bands, which is true. Just because someone disagrees with you or points out that your idol isn't as highly regarded as you seem to think doesn't mean they're not being nice.

Most of us here were born in the early to mid 90s. We lived through the bands like Rush, The Rolling Stones, Yes, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, and more because they were still making records and touring. Gaga may be famous, but not as famous as some of the bands who she probably grew up listening to.
They all had their time. Now its Gagas time. 10 years she will be replaced. But she will be remembered. Just like the bands.
Yes, Rush, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith...they had their time? They're still having it. Rush and Aerosmith are on tour along with Yes and Peter Frampton, there are still THREE active members of Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder is still touring, The Rolling Stones are still touring. Hell, Rush is even putting a new album out next year. I don't think you realize that when you're in the music business, you don't stop until you die.
Also this is an appreciation thread. Plz try to keep it nice (:
So why exactly is it in the Chronicle? If it's an APPRECIATION thread about a MUSIC ARTIST, it isn't NEWS. We have a dozen Gaga appreciation threads in the Music forum in The 4th Wall.

Obvious banking is obvious. Even if this is news or not this is no cause for an argument. He is simply "stating" what she is doing. Some may not always be informed. I think she's gained a lot in her short career in limelight, so I give her credit for that. I am not so keen on the newest types of music, but I have listened to a few of her tracks. I don't think she's the cats meow, but a lot of people seem to like her music, doesn't mean I have to. :P

The point still stands that in the music board you'd receive more of the relevant replies you're looking for as opposed to a page or two of people arguing over the nature of the thread.
On-topic: I'll agree with points raised by Matt previously. Lady Gaga isn't nearly as famous as any of the bands listed, though I feel it boils down to a single issue:
She's proven she is creative and can bring new things to the table, but she has yet to stand the test of time. It will be more interesting to see where she is in a few years. Any debate over where that is specifically is pure speculation and I've little more to say on the matter.

Last I checked, you made an appreciation thread for Gaga in the music forum back in February. Pretty much pointing that out now.
Tim has basically laid the matter on the table. Famous? Yes, but give her about 10-15 years and we'll see if she's really going to withstand.

So that's the standard now? If artist x doesn't sound like artists y and z then they simply aren't worth listening to?

Not at all, but I think that there is a difference for being considered great after 30years at the top and 3 years at the top. It is unfair to call Lady Gaga "great", she is not great nor, in my opinion, will she ever be.

Well obviously there's a difference, but she's definitely gained fame pretty fast. You can't deny that. Though I'm not the RAGING fanboy like some I've seen and talked to, I can agree with you respectfully.

I think being famous now is less of an achievement with the internet than it was in the 1960s. I just don't understand all the hype.

People like her because she's different from other artists. She's fierce, fun, and knows what she's doing. She writes her own songs, which most artists nowdays do NOT.
She's this generations Madonna. That's why all the hype surrounds her. She's evolved a hell of a lot in the 2 years she's been on the public radar. From Just Dance to Alejandro... her styles are constantly changing. She's not letting herself become old news.

Exactly, because EVERYONE knows that most artists don't write their own work. So that means every artist you listen to, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF GAGA, is unoriginal. So that means the songs that a one John Lennon wrote were all the works of his record company lackies. Songs by Michael Jackson weren't written from HIM, but his record company lackies (one of the reasons he split from the Jackson 5 was because of Motown not allowing him to be part of the writing process).
She's this generations Madonna. That's why all the hype surrounds her. She's evolved a hell of a lot in the 2 years she's been on the public radar. From Just Dance to Alejandro... her styles are constantly changing. She's not letting herself become old news.
1. This generation's Madonna is MADONNA. Lady Gaga is like a copycat in regards to Madonna. Do not compare one artist to one of greater status.
2. The hype that surrounds her is that she turns gay men straight.
3. She's becoming old news to many, including me. Look, I'll stress again, I'm a fan of hers, but I keep seeing articles on her. OH MY GOD SHE JUST MADE A FUCKING STEP, CALL THE FUCKING PRESS. Look, point of the matter is that she has been so over scrutinized by media and over produced that it makes me sick of her sometimes. She'll become old news eventually, but right now...not so likely.
Wonder.
July 20th, 2010, 12:13 AM
I don't see how she is so famous with pointless songs. Sure I like some of them but mainstream music is mostly crap this generation.
She is doing well but I don't see her improving or moving forward at all.
