The ground shook as if a tremor
From deep within the crucified heart
Of the earth were emerging in an effort
To stop all the magnetized blood that pulses
Through this planet's crust-enveloped veins
Were about to erupt and tear the planet in two,
Leaving nothing but rubble and teardrops.
But alas the ground only shook for a moment
And left the homeless wandering as they would
On any given Sunday, whether the sun were shining
Or rain drops were dive-bombing with vicious intent
From clouds onto the sidewalk, splashing violently,
Leaving a gray smudge and a piercing smile
In its point of impact.
But the sun wasn't shining and though the ground
Only shook for several moments, it could be seen
In the distant horizon that a cloud of bluish smoke
Was emerging and converging toward the starless
Night sky just over our heads and we had nowhere
To run so we just sat and gawked at the eruption
From within the earth's heart that was not brought on by destiny
But by two angry men who chose to play war
On a day where all the soldiers were on leave.

Leaving a gray smudge and a piercing smile
