Ah... Well, that's for the safety of the server and priority of members already browsing VT. The server load is basically how much strain is on the server. A value of 1.00 or below is great; 1.01-1.80 is average; 1.81-2.00 is a demand on the server; 2.01-3.00 is very demanding; 3.01+ is something to be worried about when it's been several minutes at that level. The recommended reasonable value for the server load safety (when the forums deny access to anyone else) is 5.00. I set ours to 5.50 when I upgraded the forums.
Before, we have had the safety set to 0, which disables it. At that time, the lag sometimes got so bad that being denied access would have been better than waiting 20 minutes for the page to load. I have seen the server load up at 14 before, and I don't ever want to see that again. As I described before, even a load such as 3.50 for a prolonged time is bad news.
If this is a huge inconvenience, I'll raise the server load to 7.50. Please try to cut down on high demanding activities (such as searches or constant viewing of "Who's Online") if you sense any lag.
To help the server load decrease, I have disabled immediate changes and certain checks (including viewed threads, attachments, ratings, and subscriptions). Please do not start complaining about these things - yes, viewed threads will not make forums automatically show as read, but you may double click the forum's icon to mark it as read.
As another note, if you visit this site often, please do not keep massive amounts of subscriptions - the checks they run are very server-intensive. If you do have some and you don't use them, please delete them and set your options to not subscribe after replies. This, itself, should help out the server load tremendously, however, it will require users to act for anything to happen.

get rid of checks and subscriptions as long as when you come on a thread that u havent seen shows up as bold or w/e thats all i need like the emails whos online and what there doing etc... can all go as far as i'm concerned anyway
cause it does it to me allot to which is a pain in the ass but its still better then the site like crashing so we just need to find ways to demand less from it

Could disabling "Who is online" help? Like it's not that important being able to see what threads people are viewing. If it could help the server, maybe you should try it.
WHy dont you disable subsriptions as well? If people want to keep track of the thread they can just check the forums.
I think "Who's Online" is important, I use it a ton. But I think that forum subscriptions are pointless.
Edit- I just did it to me..

I will look into it but I don't know what to tell the hosting company. Can one of you cut and past the error message please?

Because if you need to contact an admin, then you can see who is on, that way you can see who you should pm....that;s just one example.

But you can see who is online, just not seeing what thread their viewing.

I'm pretty sure that the online now page is directly connected to the little section at the bottom of the forum. Maybe I'm wrong though....

do members get priority over guests?
cause theres like 41 guests on right now and theyve gotta be slowing the server down the majority of them are those stupid spiders from google and yahoo
if there isnt already would there be a way to set it up so members have priority over guests

I put in a service request to dotservant our hosting company to see if they can fix the problem. It might help if we turn off the log files feature cause it records everything.
Just wanted you to know I'm working on the problem. :)

There is no need to contact the hosting company. As I have said before, I have set our safety level to a very reasonable one. Now, it's actually at 7.50.
I will raise the limit to 10 - absolutely no more than that. If you still get the error message, then report it to me through email with the date, time and timezone of which it has occurred. I will try to ease up the server load more, however, I can guarantee nothing.

I think there should be a priority!

Guests probably get turned away more than members do. If the vBulletin team has thought this through, then I imagine that they already give the priority to the members. Any guests from that point will be turned away - including search spiders. They may continue to show up in the "Who's Online" box because they'll still be trying to browse the site, however, they will continue to be turned away.
The server load limit is set at 10, and from what I described earlier, that's more than triple a very reasonable warning level and exactly double the recommended warning level.
Now... again... Please ease up on the searches, member viewing, subscriptions, and such! That will decrease the server load.
If you experience anymore problems, email me. I will try to work out something better with our internal settings. If no one emails me, then I can only assume this issue is no longer happening.
