Who here is planning on going to Grad school?

As of right now I'm planning on two years at NYU Poly for Biomedical Engineering, then 4 years of med school. (Then seven years of residency for Psychiatry and Neurology. )

I'm planning on going to grad school but haven't picked which one(s) yet. I'm going in my fourth year soon but I'm taking a year after that, then I'll go to a grad school. I know the area I want to study in, looked around at several grad schools online but they were somewhat vague so I'll need to look into them more soon. Apparently though we have some similar tastes as I'm also studying in psychology, neuroscience and pharmacology plus toxicology. I'm adding in some law and criminology to help the forensic psychology courses also.

What are you planning to do with that, if I may ask?

That is the big mystery for me.

I have an interest in forensic psychology and dealing with violent or psychotic individuals as patients because you always have to have your wits about you. I'd like to be a clinician and/or researcher applying some of the pharmacology to these patients while also studying them from a neurological aspect because I've always been interested in the brain. Studying how it works in these patients can help understand it in other individuals. Alternatively, as being a researcher, it'd be in pharmacology and neuroscience. All I know though is I don't want to be a teacher and any psychology I do study, I prefer it to be within criminology, forensic psychology or neuropsychology. Lastly, I'd want to pursue being a clinician and/or researcher for traumatic brain injuries for two reasons.

First, about a year ago, my grandfather fell in his house and bashed his head quite severely, rendering him unconscious for a bit. When we took him to the hospital, I noticed something was not quite right with him. While we were waiting in the hospital, I was doing a soduku puzzle and he wanted to see what it was so naturely I let him. It was off for him because saw the grid tilting towards the left and the spaces shrinking and distorting in shape as they were further from him a lot. When he went for a CAT scan, it showed there was bleeding in his brain around the occipital lobe region (wasn't told the exact area). Fortunately, it didn't severely affect his ability to walk or function but anytime he sees a grid, he has some impairment.

Second, I did one excellent course in neuropsychology and realized not only is there the DSM-IV-TR for mental illnesses but many of the brain injuries can seem to be very unusual, something one would expect to be in the DSM but it's not. This biological list of sydnromes I have a lot of interest in as well.

So to sum it up: clinician and/or researcher in traumatic brain injury, psychology involving violent and psychotic criminals/patients, criminology and using pharmacutical treatments.

I'm a bit all over the board, so what are you hoping to do?

I keep going back and forth between a few things.

My first is a practicing MD, doing psychiatry and neurology.

My second option is medical research, in which case my psych undergrad is going to go to waste (as far as job applications go.) If I do this, I may also opt to complete my MD anyway, and try to balance both, although I'd go for being a GP most likely.

My third choice is profiling, preferably working for the FBI's BAU. I don't think this is going to happen, but I haven't quite ruled it out yet.

I'm not quite sure, as I'm going into my third year of college in September, and still don't know what I want to major in :whoops:

Don't worry about it. I'm going into my 3rd year too. I have some friends who still don't know what they want to major in. Do you at least have an idea about the field, or what general career you want to be in?

For my third-year course in forensic psychology, we had a profiler give a guest lecture who was with the RCMP but taught FBI candidates and did profiling in the USA as well. I really thought about profiling too but the more I learned about it, the less I wanted to do it. But if you want to do it, then I say go for it.

If it was about what I wanted to do, I'd end up with a half a dozen jobs. I' want to be a profiler, but I feel I'd probably be better and happier with my MD or doing lab research.
