Does depressing music like joy division ever keep you from cutting? Sometimes it can help me in that way, I find that really strange and was wondering if anyone else experienced anything like this.

...Sometimes it does me, but acturally most of the time i listen to depressing music while cutting...

Depressing music makes me feel even more depressed therefore I'm more likely to harm myself especially if I have urges to do so at that time.

I'm sure there are some people who feel it helps though.

It does do that, but some days it just makes me too sad to even care. It is not good, but maybe it is?

If it prevents you harming yourself, I'd say that's a plus, but I can't imagine feeling too sad to care is any good for you either.

I'd see a professional about how you're feeling.

I tend to try and listen to upbeat music when I feel like cutting, depressing music just makes it worse

I did, actually - well, when I intended to consciously resist the urges, that is. The idea is, rather than cutting, deliberately channeling that negative energy into the music and giving it a release in that manner. It can be a useful alternative to cutting when approached skillfully. However, listening to depressing music simply because the feelings have attracted oneself to it, will almost always end up feeding the negativity. So, it can go both ways.

sometimes it can make urges worse... because a song isn't just a song. it has a memory to it. it reminds me of something, that someting usually gets me to cut. for example dax johnson used to remind me of my ex, so did within temptation so when i'd hear certain songs, the urges and pain all would rush back..
