What do numbers and letters in bra sizes mean?

I've read some surveys that ask girls their breast size and I find stuff like "32A" or "23C"... What does that mean? Is a bigger number a bigger size? What do the letters mean?

haha the benefits of having girl friends! the number is the inches around (similar to chest size for guys) and the letter is boobsize. so if you hear 32DD, they're big >< the letters range from A to D most of the time but there are weird sizes for super big.
