I've been messing up my life for a couple of years now and I know people have been inspired by the "Suicide pledge" over in the Psyciatry Ward. I just thought people could benefit froma similar pledge here.

So:
For all those people who have been on recreational drugs or abused medication and have come off.
For all those people who have seen the damage it has done to friends, family or even complete strangers.
For all those people who never want to have to say that they have seen or felt the damage.
Take the pledge!

Only people who promise not to touch recreational drugs or abuse meds can sign the pledge and I hope lots do sign!
Once you do, you cannot turn back without disappointing everyone else who has signed.
So are you strong enough to take the pledge? Well you better be.

I [your name], pledge never to use recreational drugs or abuse any medication under any circumstance.

P.S. Thanks to thesphinx for inspiration.

Pledgees:

1. Jess
2. Charlie

I can't pledge to this, because I see no reason to stop. It's not doing any damage to my body, so why stop?

Recreational drugs are tricky things. Generally speaking, the legally prescribed drugs are a lot worse for you in terms of parts per million inside of you but people normally respect what their doctor gives them so will not abuse it. People have no real respect for natural drugs such as cannabis, LSD, shrooms e.t.c. and therefore seemingly have more of a tendency to abuse them.

Point is, drugs don't necessarily have to harm you if you're able to respect them. Lots of people safely consume prescribed drugs and are fine with them because they respect the warnings and take what they're meant to.

In conclusion, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to say or think that any form of recreational drug, be it legal or not, will definitely cause harm to you. I'm a strong supporter in valid, un-biased education about drugs and toleration. In countries like Holland, the safer drugs like cannabis are tolerated and generally used in a safe way on safe premises and for those who do respect the privilege they get to do that, no harm ever comes to them.

Therefore, whilst I totally support what you're saying in your poll, it's something I wouldn't adhere to.

I'm quite happy using recreational drugs such as alcohol in the UK and cannabis where it's legal because I know that in moderation they do no harm to me.

Does this include all recreational drugs, i.e. caffeine, alcohol and tobacco?

In any case, I wouldn't sign it because I don't think that the cost-benefit analysis justifies it.

Just to defend this idea, I did specify about the abuse of recreational drugs and meds, the point is they are carefully controlled for a reason: they can do serious harm. Yes some people, and countries, allow the use of drugs but in safe amounts eg. yes you can take meds but don't chomp down a box full of diclofenex ya know?
