A 12-year-old boy visiting Toronto for a soccer tournament died Saturday in hospital after an incident at a hotel pool on Friday.

The boy, who was staying with his soccer team at the Toronto Don Valley Hotel near Victoria Park Avenue and Eglinton Avenue, was rushed to Toronto East General Hospital when he was pulled from the pool.

He was swimming with about 15 other children when some of them noticed him, and another boy, struggling to stay afloat. The 12-year-old was pulled from the bottom of the pool. A 13-year-old boy was also rescued but was unharmed. The pool was supervised by several adult chaperones but no lifeguard, police said.

The 12-year-old boy, from Brooklyn, died Saturday morning. His family travelled from the United States and were with him in the hospital.

“They were there when he passed away,” said Detective Jeff Allington.

Thats sad...that must have been a pretty deep pool?
Usually the pools near here are about 6 feet and if he were about 5 feet, still seem slike he could have survived???

It hardly seems like a big news story to me. Don't get me wrong, its sad obviously, but kids drown in pools, we know that dont we? I wouldnt expect a hotel pool to have qualified lifeguards on duty or anything so accidents are going to happen.

that's really makes me upset, it was about 15 person there and they all saw him struggling and non of them try to do anything about it. i don't know what to say. someone have to take that responsibility and i think its the hotel because they didn't have a "life guard". the adult who were next to the pool they are responsible too, anyway i feel sorry for him and his family

I've always wondered how one drowns in a pool. Like... unless you don't know how to swim (in which case why are you out of shallow water?), once you hit bottom you kind of just... push up, and you're not drowning any more. I have generally always assumed that most pool drownings result from head injuries or people who can't swim and do stupid things.

Sad story. Though not really news, per se.
