Hi. I am really interested in learning to sing a LOT better... I don't want to ask my parents for voice lessons because I am just not comfortable with my voice to sing in front of anyone, including a trained instructor. Does anyone know any singing or breathing excersies that could help me out??? It would REALLY be appreciated.

If youre embarrassed to sing in front of people then whats the point of learning how to sing?

I can tell you that if you do get a private teacher you will not be scared to sing in front of them...and not just because you pay them, but you will be much much better within the first month

I think you should go for the voice instructor they can help you learn proper pitch and everything. =)

Find a good choir to join, you should get some warm ups which would help you with voice production and breathing.

I think to get better at singing, you just have to keep doin it. Honestly I think I have a pretty good voice, but I don't know why or how. I just sing how I have for years. Lessons for a few days is all I've had. I don't even think I took much from it, but maybe I did. I just sing! lol.

My advice to you is like Connor said, Just keep singing. That's how I've gotten better. I sing all the time. lol
But if you want to get a lot better a lot faster, I would encourage you to get private lessons. There are a lot of things about the voice most people don't understand, and you could end up damaging your voice if you don't know what you're doing.
And in regards to not being comfortable singing in front of people. The only way you're going to become more comfortable singing in front of people is by doing it. force yourself to sing in front of people. Otherwise you're just going to remain afraid to sing in front of others.

The smart thing to do is to find an instructor to help you improve pitch and range. But this doesn't really mean you can't do it on your own. The only reason I haven't gotten a voice instructor is because I like being self taught and learn via trial and error. Learning on your own, you can develop your own style and be unique. But if you don't feel like getting an instructor, then do it on your own, maybe find a book on vocal training.

Wonder.

I agree with this minus the "the smart thing to do" part. Teachers teach it one specific way and then you lose what makes your singing style different from others. That's why you should always learn things on your own. You feel better and more accomplished in the end also.

I've got an exercise for you.

Find a big book. I used a medical textbook, but anything that's big and heavy will work. Lay on the floor and put the book above your diaphragm. Practice breathing such that the book lifts a noticeable amount. The higher you can lift it and the longer you can hold it, the better.

I'll think of more later.

But how does that stop you specifically from not developing your own style? He could simply take the lessons he's been taught and use them to his advantage by stopping said lessons and go on to teach himself to develop his style.

True but his style would still have the base of what he was taught. Ruining the pureness of his voice. Either way works but you would feel more accomplished if you did it on your own.

Another thing is to google it! There are plenty of pages online teaching basics and exercises! Try both google and youtube.. you'll be surprised!

I took a couple days of vocal lessons, and learned breathing techniques and that's it. However, you could get a really really good instructor! Good luck :)

Thanks guys! You all helped a lot... I think I am going to take all of your advice. I am going to do it on my own for a bit so I can hopefully sing decently, and then I will ask about an instructor. Thanks everyone!
