I just graduated from middle school and am on my way to high school and marching band. I have some questions for veteran marchers.
1) Uniforms.
1a) Does the uniform protect against the cold weather very well? I hate playing with numb fingers.
1b) Do guys have to wear athletic cups during practices and games? Blehh. Sorry I asked that, but I need to know.
1c) Are the uniforms comfy? I know they can't restrict motion, but how comfortable are they, from PJ's to body armor.
1d) Do we wear our undies under the uniform?
2) Practice.
2a) Are we expected to be in uniform during most practices? If not, what to wear?
2b) Do we do exercises like push-ups and sit-ups? What do we do?
2c) Can practice be fun?
3) Locker Rooms.
3a) Do we shower after games and practices? Are the showers awkward? I have experience showering in middle school, but I think this would be different.
3b) How rampant is bullying?
Thanks for answering. You can feel good about yourself for solving the problems of a 14-year-old n00b to the world of marching. :P

Heyy (:
1) Uniforms.
1a) Does the uniform protect against the cold weather very well? I hate playing with numb fingers.
~ My school's uniforms are pretty nifty against cold weather, but sometimes they just aren't enough, so we put hand warmers in our gloves.
1b) Do guys have to wear athletic cups during practices and games? Blehh. Sorry I asked that, but I need to know.
~Umm, I'm a girl so no. And I don't think any of the boys do either, though. :P
1c) Are the uniforms comfy? I know they can't restrict motion, but how comfortable are they, from PJ's to body armor.
~ On a scale of 1-10 I'd say a 7, it kind of grows on you. (:
1d) Do we wear our undies under the uniform?
~ Umm, in my school girls wear a tank top, thin shorts and panties under our uniforms. The guys wear thin shorts and a t shirt
2) Practice.
2a) Are we expected to be in uniform during most practices? If not, what to wear?
No, we don't rehearse in uniform, if it's summer/fall wear shorts, sneakers, and a bright t shirt to help with the sun. Also have a cap/hat, sunblock, and water (:
2b) Do we do exercises like push-ups and sit-ups? What do we do?
2c) Can practice be fun?
Silly! Practices are ALWAYS fun. (:
3) Locker Rooms.
3a) Do we shower after games and practices? Are the showers awkward? I have experience showering in middle school, but I think this would be different.
We just go back to the school, change out of the uniforms, and go home
3b) How rampant is bullying? None. (:

Now im not in band but i know quite a bit about the band kids and how things operate
1) Uniforms.
1a) Does the uniform protect against the cold weather very well? I hate playing with numb fingers. Ours sometimes wear underarmour but in general you shouldnt get cold and band uniforms are usually always logn sleeved and long pants anyways so it doesnt really matter
1b) Do guys have to wear athletic cups during practices and games? Blehh. Sorry I asked that, but I need to know.
1c) Are the uniforms comfy? I know they can't restrict motion, but how comfortable are they, from PJ's to body armor. umm...they are stiff jackets and pants...not the greatest fabric...not sure...definitely not PJs...
1d) Do we wear our undies under the uniform? of course
2) Practice.
2a) Are we expected to be in uniform during most practices? If not, what to wear? nope, usually practices are without uniform
2b) Do we do exercises like push-ups and sit-ups? What do we do? you just practice formations with your instrument or pretend like you have your instrument, but no, they dont do rigorous physical activty like you would do in a gym class
2c) Can practice be fun? of course
3) Locker Rooms.
3a) Do we shower after games and practices? Are the showers awkward? I have experience showering in middle school, but I think this would be different. of course not
3b) How rampant is bullying? depends on your area but im sure it would be fine. there shouldnt be any bullying between band kids...

1) Uniforms.
1a) Does the uniform protect against the cold weather very well? I hate playing with numb fingers.Depending on where you live, your fingers will get cold at night, despite the warm uniforms. If you play instruments that allow gloves (saxophones) then you can wear them on the stands at a football game. [Ask your director] Otherwise, no because they make it harder to play. (Gloves that is) It all depends on the weather if it'll be cold or hot.
1b) Do guys have to wear athletic cups during practices and games? Blehh. Sorry I asked that, but I need to know.No
1c) Are the uniforms comfy? I know they can't restrict motion, but how comfortable are they, from PJ's to body armor. My uniform is heavy and it does restrict motion, but only for activities such as putting my hands straight up. Otherwise it's not too bad. Mine is made of wool, so it gets hot.
1d) Do we wear our undies under the uniform?
Yes. Usually you should wear shorts and a t-shirt over your underwear and put the uniform on over that.
2) Practice.
2a) Are we expected to be in uniform during most practices? If not, what to wear? No. As long as you're wearing sneakers, and are comfortable in whatever you're marching in (jeans, shorts, etc.) then you should be fine
2b) Do we do exercises like push-ups and sit-ups? What do we do? No. We do marching basics, like techniques and such. We do stretch beforehand, but it's nothing too difficult.
2c) Can practice be fun?Only if you make it fun. Honestly, I find them very lengthy and tiring, even if you're with friends. But if you do well, you will have fun.
3) Locker Rooms.
3a) Do we shower after games and practices? Are the showers awkward? I have experience showering in middle school, but I think this would be different. No. we usually come back to the school, get changed, and leave. You can shower at home.
3b) How rampant is bullying? Hardly any in the band. There are cliques, so unless you make a clique mad, they won't bother you. Band kids are usually understanding and friendly. Inside school, people might joke how nerdy marching band is, but it's not serious.
