If you were to choose, would you have the world use a universal language? It doesn't matter what language, it would be a language that the whole world would use?

Would you agree to this?

I think it's a good idea, simply because it would make things more simple.

I think it's a lot simplier and more realistic if people would just learn more than one language.

would i just have one language? absolutly not.

i like the idea of other languages, its adds more culture to things. and it also spices things up, mixing words too and fro,

I think every1 in every country should learn 1 extra language besides their homelanguage which everyone would learn this would break a few diplomatic language barriers. I dont agree that we should all speak 1 language and lose all the old Barbarian languages Spanish, Italian, France, German and all those cuz there like a heritage it would be helpful and more comfortable if every1 would speak 1 language internationaly and in homely they all speak their homelanguage ( I hope you catched my drift through the horribly written throught :P )

I know 3 languages... English, Spanish and Italian... language barriers have never been a problem for me!
Even tho, i think, there is one language, recently created, that its like a mix of the most important languages... only like 80 people know it, but its been getting famous... heard my dad said that... im not sure tho

Yeah, I was just being sarcastic I hope you know. Japanese is an extreamly hard language to learn vocally, and chianese is both orally and cirolgrapically impossible.

but chinese sounds so fucking awsome.

hahaha!!
Yeah, japanese its the hardest language... eather to speak, write and read.
Each word has its own simbol which makes it hard to read and write. Then, like you said, its pretty hard (at least for us, which language comes from latin [which im fucking learning this year])...
For some reason I don't like chinese... I dunno...
I just don't like it

BTW, does someone know where chinese, japanese, and those weird languages come from?? I say they come from alliens, that came here, and taught them! *that was sarcastic, but really, where do they come from??*

i think thats Esperanto. or whatever way you spell it!! its supposed to be a world language or something.

everyone should learn at least another language, actually they should be forced to do so. like i can speak English, Irish and German, although wouldnt be fluent in the last too, but could hold up a decent convo. but we really should be fluent in one other language.

omg you know german?? I've been wanting to learn it since i learned english!! I've had lots of opportunitues, but I had to reject because this year im starting latin (damn school) and its not going to be easy to learn 2 languages one dead, and one i want, while i have to get my italian better... today we had to describe ourselves, say our hobbyes and stuff, and the teacher almost couldnt read some things because of grammar...

I think it would be a great idea but never would happen

one word

esperanto

and now more words

what is it
'Esperanto is a planned (constructed) language intended for use between people who speak different native languages."

i think all schools should offer this as a language course as it is the simplest language out there to learn. I do dissagree with making ppl speak a certian language though, and no one should ever be forced to abandon their native language if they don't want to. In a couple generations i think that tons of ppl would know this language and would probly catch on quickly.

i disagree. i think having different languages is good because it diversifies the world. i would much rather have the seperations of language, that God created, then have robots. Diversity is amazing good for a population, as preached in Biology and many other science classes. I also dont think Spanish is a barbaric language, because that word derives from Greek times, and shows cultural and mental inferiorities and it basically says that they are not "civilized". Trust me, that is not the word to use. I think u meant to say "older" or "outdated" languages.

Lords servant if youd know.. History youd know that Spanish, France, Italian, German and practicly every language in the European area is old Barbarian language :P because in the times after the death of the last Roman Emperor the place was full of Gallic kingdoms and so on :)

Having one language would kind of ruin other people's cultures. I think everyone should learn a 2nd language atleast and maybe a 3rd though. I'm learning French right now. I wanted to take German but they cut it from our curriculum. Next for me is Italian because my Grandpa's Italian.

I still want to try and learn it though. I love the culture and food. My grandpa's parents immigrated from Sicily.

Italian even if its hard, is a really pretty language... I love reading it, because for some reason, it makes it more interesting, and stuff... I really like it, even if its a fucking hard language... you will also like it!

I really don't think that there should be one universal language as i really enjoy learning French and would hate if if there wasnt any realy culture across the world.

EDIT : I looked this up about esperanto... it looks interesting, but first i gotta learn italian right, then latin, which i have to stupy because im in high school, and then i might be able to learn it =D

What is Esperanto?

Esperanto is a language, but not of any country or ethnic group: it is a neutral, international language.

Origins

The basic rules and words of Esperanto were proposed by L. L. Zamenhof at the end of the 19th century. Within a few years, people started learning it and formed a worldwide community. Since then, Esperanto has been in use (and freely evolving) just like any other language.

Characteristics

Esperanto has a very regular structure. Words are often made from many other roots, and in this way the number of words which one must memorise is made much smaller. The language is phonetic, and the rules of pronunciation are very simple, so that everyone knows how to pronounce a written worde and vice-versa. All this make the learning of the language relatively easy.

Most Esperanto roots are similar to words from Romance, Germanic or Slavic languages. However, Esperanto is not merely a "pot-pourri" of those languages, but a true and independent language in itself - structurally more similar, furthermore, to non-European languages than to European ones.

Using Esperanto

Esperanto is most useful for neutral communication. That means that communication through Esperanto does not give advantages to the members of any particular people or culture, but provides an ethos of equality of rights, tolerance and true internationalism. This can be seen in many diverse situations: international meetings, books, magazines, music, the Internet of course, and often also in private and family life.

Young people can have very meaningful experiences through Esperanto: being hosted free of charge in the homes of people in other countries and making contact with their culture without barriers; enjoying international festivals and training at interesting seminars; becoming acquainted with and learning more foreign languages; and becoming active and taking an interest in TEJO, as the case should arise.

OK, OK, just one goofing off post before I get serious. This NEEDS to be said, just based on the title of the thread alone!

One language to rule them all, and one language to find them, one language to bring them into darkness and bind them! :D

OK, OK, I'll go find something to post on now. Oh, btw, it's currently not feasible to have a world language, but given a choice, with no reprecussions for either side, I'd have one world language. Imagine how many more people would be on this forum, for instance. How much more of the world we could interact with. Imagine if there were no need for translation, that everyone understood exactly what was meant, and no paraphrasing was required. Imagine how much more massive MMOs could be, how much more literature we'd have to read, how much more music we'd have to listen to. It would be something magnificent. One language gets my vote. One language to rule them all, and all that jazz!
