Ryanair is planning to run flights where passengers stand during the journey at a cost of just £5 per ticket.

Michael O'Leary, the airline's chief executive, will set out proposals today that include charging customers to use the loo.

A standing area with "vertical seats" will be introduced at the back of its fleet of 250 planes.

He said that charging customers £1 to make use of facilities would encourage travellers on one hour flights to use lavatories at the airport instead of on the aircraft.

The Irishman said he intended to introduce coin-operated loos and added: "The other change we've been looking at is taking out the last 10 rows of seats so we will have 15 rows of seats and the equivalent of 10 rows of standing area."

A Ryanair spokesman said that Boeing had been consulted over refitting the fleet with "vertical seats" which would allow passengers to be strapped in while standing up, which would cost between £4 and £8 per person.

Safety testing will be carried out next year.

However, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority said the plans would struggle to meet safety requirements.

He said: "It's aviation law that people have to have a seat-belt on from take-off and landing so they would have to be in a seat. I don't know how Mr O'Leary would get around that one. During turbulence passengers also have to have a seat-belt on."

Mr O'Leary was interview for ITV's How to Beat the Budget Airlines which airs on Thursday night at 7.30pm.

Wow. It's now come to the point where I can't get through one Ryanair article without either cringing or LOLing.

Considering I fly from liverpool to dublin and back, at least once every six weeks, this sounds good. I get uncomfortable from sitting in those seats for 20 minutes. So standing for an hour would be like torture.

LMFAO, this is amazing :P I just got back from a RyanAir flight from Dublin to Madrid, and that was one of the most horrific things I have ever had to go through. -__- I can't imagine how horrific it would be standing up lol

To be honest, I can't see this happening any time soon. The aircraft are only certified to carry 189 passengers, and Ryanair have 189 seats. They would have to get the Boeing 737-800 re-certified, which will take forever and cost a lot. Also, the safety regulations will be a bit of a problem. They [passengers "standing"] have to be able to withstand certain g-forces in the event of a crash.

To me this won't go ahead. This is just media fodder to fuel Michael O'Leary's press greed. He also sued a TV station this week for "over promoting another airline". This, I don't think, will happen.

Needless to say, I would rather suture my nipples together than fly Ryanair as it is.

They were looking into it with their new "Regional" brand, but I don't think it'll work, considering you'd have to compete with Ryanair, and Norfolk Line car ferries too. Drive up to Manchester? :P

Ryanair's longest flight is under 5 hours long. A lot of people work standing for 8 hours plus. I get what you mean though.

I've heard this idea before. I actually like it if they could make it safe.

Michael O'Leary. And he is by no means an "idiot". As much as I hate him he is one of the smartest business men in the airline world. Do you not understand just how much free publicity this gets? It's made its way to VT like.

I've heard this idea before. I actually like it if they could make it safe.

The idea was originally proposed by Spring Air, China's largest budget airline in 2007. However this is next to impossible to be safe. My grandfather was an aeronautical engineer and agrees. There are too many little tidbits that need addressing.

Having just flew to France on Ryanair, I don't think standing up would make it any worse, without sounding eliltest, the people are morons, the staff are thick and everything is a rip off, I think it is a good idea for short flights and represents value for money

Well in all fairness, I've flown on Ryanair before and had a nice crew. It's luck of the draw. The BOB is a rip off. That being said, airlines make a FORTUNE on the drinks, etc sold onboard. It's how Ryanair can price the flights themselves as so low.

Also, whilst it is a good idea (well I don't think so) it will most likely not come to fruition.

I would imagine that there are...stumps or something in the seat that you can rest or lean on?

In the seats in the aircraft already or the standing ones?

Remember when you got free meals on your flight? Now you have to pay for the bathroom. That is very stupid. I would rather travel by train, where it would be much cheaper.

With most airlines, on a lot of flights, drinks and meals are still free, depending on duration and airline. Heck, on a 45 minute flight in America last year, I got an unlimited supply of cookies and coke like.

actually this doesn't seem like too bad an idea, I have to fly out to wales from time to time and it costs an absolute fortune, I think I'd try it once to see wether or not it's horrific torture and if it isn't I might end up using it regularly. If it is, I suppose sitting down even on a ryanair flight might be worth extra.
