I am quite certain that I have depression. I am not interested at seeing a professional about my condition at the moment. (I know the benefits and how irogent ill seem but its not for me at the moment)

I have done quite a bit of research on depression treatment and have come across a few sources that cite sleep deprivation as a method to treat depression. The idea is that lack of sleep causes a release of serotonin and therefore temporary remedy's depression.

I am wondering if anyone here has tried this as a method to treat their own depression and what the effects were and if you would recommend it.

Thanks,
-A

I wouldnt... i've deprived myself from sleep anyway... it just leaves you tired and drained half the time, however you do get occasional high moments due to your brain lacking sleep.
Depriving your body from sleep isn't a very good idea, and can be harmful to both body and mind, so yeah. I really wouldn't reccomened it, and I wouldn't say it cures anything... especially not depression. If anything it makes it worse...

I wouldn't deprive myself from sleep. In theory, you'd have more time to think, which isn't always a good thing. There's only so many hours of the day that you can keep yourself busy for. Sleep can be irrelevant. When you wake up after sleeping 10 hours and you're still mentally exhausted, that's what depression does. I remember having slept 13 hours while medicated, and I felt exhausted waking up, mentally. Depression can do so many things.

I've done it unintentionally, (insomnia and all nighters). Does it work? Sometimes. You can never tell if it's gonna work or not and sometimes it makes it worse. When it does work, the instant you sleep, the effects go away. When it makes it worse, sleeping will sometimes make it better and sometimes not.

Long story short, it's not worth the effort, and is more likely to do harm than it is to do good.

sleep is a key factor in depression and it is vital to have a good sleep routine if you are going to battle past it. sleep deprivation just makes your body physically tired and when one is physically tired the mind has no of a chance to take over causing more thinknig time. in the past sleep deprivation and trouble getting to sleep have been triggers for many peoples depression and i can tell you first hand it can work but the chances are closer to none then to 10%. the best thing you can do sleep wise is:
1. give yourself time to unwind in the evenings,
2. set yourself a reasonable time to go to sleep and go to bed 15 mins before,
3. make sure you have a good loud alarm clock
4. try to get the same amount of sleep each night, it will settle your body.
believe it or not physical wellfair has a great effect on the mind and if your mind is unstable (sorry if i used the wrong word there) then it effects your body and vice versa.

yours taylin..

p.s. different thing work for different people but with sleep a routine is the best route to choose.
