View Full Version : I just had a crazy idea...

...and it involved the BP oil spill. "Topkill" failed for an obvious reason: ergonomics. It would never be able to contain the oil at that depth because of the excessive weight and small collection room. So, getting to my crazy idea: I thought about how a condom works. My idea was an oversized condom made of a durable material (Kevlar or similar material) that instead of the resovoir tip, it is connected to a surface vessel, that is fitted over the broken well. Give me feedback it sounds possible or "what kind of acid did you take" insane.

Confusing. So how does this stop oil from spewing out of the hole?

Same way a condom prevents unwanted pregnancy. Once again, the base of it is placed on the broken well and extended to the surface to an oil collector. It would beat "Topkill" because it is just a free-flow to the surface.

So the oil goes through a tube to a tank to hold the oil, preventing it from going everywhere?

I suppose it's possible...
But like condoms, it probably wouldn't be 100% effective :/

At the moment, Kevlar seems like the strongest flexible material.

i'd say the ocean is already pregnant, and i suppose this might work but there are a bunch of other resources being offered by other resources obama could be using but just isnt.

see i had an idea like this. my idea was to get alarge concreat or metal tube with one side sealed off. place the tube over the well and drain the water out and let it fill with oil. after enough oil spills out the wheight of the oil would overcome the pressure of the leak and plug it. then we clean up the mess on the cost and we go home knowing we saved the world

Too bad the pressure from the build up would either cause the pipe to rupture elsewhere or push the tube away.

At the moment, I don`t really feel like saving BP`s butt. They don`t need that idea.

I'm sure BP have quite a number of engineers and people who know a fair bit more than any of us about this problem

Perhaps you could make a pipeline made of carbon nanotubes from the ruptured well to the surface with vessels taking on the oil till it could be capped?

That would be great if the boat had a penis.

hahaha are u kidding me? maybe it will be successful in a comedy show:P but not in real life. keep thinking good to know that some people are worry about it.

They're doing basically this, they've been siphoning for a while now. You can't just build a miles-long condom, though. It's probably some kind of pipe.

the base not being smooth would still be a problem

ok after the condom is on what are they gonna use for a morning after pill

Peace God

the oil isnt coming from a boat

Whatever goes up must come down. Would it be secure around the pipe. Otherwise it would leak out the sides of the "condom". I get this idea and it might work, but the pressure from the pipe would be too much for it and eventually explode again. +1 for ingenuity.

OK, let's just have the ecosystem die because no one wants to help BP. You sir are a retard.

right, but calm down you don't have to be harsh on him

Well, seeing as BP cut corners on the drilling design, I kinda wanted BP to go down because of their mistakes.

Can I see a source? I don't trust passing comments like that on the news if they're not backed up. They could have just been reporting an accusation.

Don`t joke about retardation. My uncle is mentally retarded. Anyway, here is your link Alex.http://thedailybeast.com/cheat-sheet/item/bp-used-riskier-well-design/oil-spill/

Long-string wells are made of a continuous length of steel, which makes the well sturdier over time—a point Mr. Hayward alluded to in his testimony, noting that the design decision had "to do with the long-term integrity of the well." The Minerals Management Service signed off on BP's long-string plan for the Horizon well, he added. "It was approved by the MMS," Mr. Hayward said.

It's more a question of safer in which way. The well they used is a perfectly safe design, and common in pre-explored areas, such as where the blowout occurred. While this kind of well is more vulnerable to the type of accident that happened, it is safer against wear, tear, pressure, etc. Is it cheaper? Yes. But a Honda's cheaper than a Ferrari. Doesn't mean the Ferrari's safer.

Safety should be a top priority when drilling thousands of feet below the oceans surface.

Doesn't mean people shouldn't give them ideas on how to fix this disaster.

I'm not "joking" about retardation. I'm using it in the same sense as "stupid", but with emphasis on the "stupid" part. If I called you stupid, you'd have no problem(not in the same sense). Stupid and retarded are the same thing because that's what they are, the same thing.

Agreed, but because they favored the wrong kind of safety, they should be condemned? They protected the well against other issues, but unfortunately, could not protect it from all issues.

It was rather insulting to me and my intelligence, just because I thought that BP should use their own ideas to solve their own problems that they caused. Besides, it looks like BP may have successfully capped the well.

thats how i think of it as well but i can see it as a pipe not anything with elastic material, then again im no expert but who knows maybe it would work!!!! :D
