So, what do you guys think of swearing?

I'm like an old person when it comes to swearing, i hate hearing it.

I rarely swear. I think swearing is appropriate if you are angry about something, but I just hate it when people just repeatedly swear when they talk about little issues. There is a point where swearing is just not neccesary.

I don't mind it if im just with my friends and there's no one else around, but when i'm with my friends and they swear on the bus, on the street, basically anywhere in public, i just find it embarrasing.

Sometimes I do wonder why on earth people would find words offensive...they are just words.

I really want to tell my friends to stop, but how can I do this without looking like a douche, and looking like I think i'm better than them. Should I just ignore it and not say anything?

Tbh mate, it irritates me too! I hate walking down the street hearing people on the phone effing and blinding, if im with my mates, i do kinda swear alot but i don't do it infront of people i don't know because I think it's really rude and embarassing.

You should just say "shut up man :L" make a joke of it!

I sometimes swear, but I don't like it when it's too much.
What you need to do is ignore and learn to live with it, I doubt they'll change. It's a personality quality and although it's a flaw to you, they may not feel the same way. If you tell them, it may turn the times you are together awkward, because they would be worried not to swear because of you.

Good luck :)

A word is a word. It will only bother you if you let it bother you.

Anyway, people are idiots when it comes to swearing. I do it with class.

I don't really swear. One reason is because I don't want my parents to hear me, but I say "jackass" quite a lot because it is a wonderful word to describe jackasses. Even when I'm not around my parents, I don't really swear that much. I only do it when I really feel like it.

I agree with the OP.

None of my family members swear, apart from my mom, but she only does it when she's angry or upset or whatever

I hate it when people at my school swear about little stuff.

I don't swear but tbh I use the bad words in my head.....:/

I use it when I'm mad and that I can understand but other than that I really try not to. I think people who go around saying "eff this and eff that" all the time are overdoing it. No offense. :/

I tend to swear quite a lot. I might have picked it up from my father a long time ago, because not only was he in the Navy, but he's always drunk so he doesn't really care what he says whether offensive or not.

I use them at appropriate times. Or when I make it funny use it in a joke to spice it up a bit. If you do over do it. It makes you sound illiterate and even though I do swear and won't be a hypocrite, but it doesn't always make you look very smart, or give a good impression about you. So I tend to do it around the people I know and realize that I don't do it all the time.

I swear a lot. A word is a word and that doesn't change, words are only offensive as you find them, If I found the word "hello" offensive does that make it a swear word?

I swear a LOT. So does all my family, be it under their breath (grandparents) or out loud for all to hear (me and parents)

No, but some words are just unacceptable to some people and they would much rather use other ways of expressing themselves other than using vulgarity and or obscenities.

I swear quite a lot. In good old England all the kids swear, it's just a normal thing for us. Maybe I should swear less but that no fun, is it?

They're unacceptable because people are bitches and need to grow up and learn to handle shit.

i swear all the time, around friends, siblings, cousins, and parents, just not around teachers.

it's just a word. but if you don't like what your friends say then:

a.tell them what you think if they're your friends they'll respect you and watch what they say in public around you

b.just dont say anything if you don't wanna sound like a "douche" :D

c.don't be friends with them. "dont hang out with the wrong crowd"

really i don't want to say i hate it and think it's really vulgur and rude( especially with todays slangs and terms etc) because i do it all the time so if i say i hate it and people shouldn't do it then i am being a hypocrite right?
but really for me its a habit and gets me into trouble alot
anyways yeah thats my input

Thanks everyone for the replies. Interesting to know other people's opinions.

I said in my first post I rarely swear, well thats sort of true. I swear, but not as much as a lot of people. I just do it sometimes if i'm angry or having a joke, but other than that I dont really do it, and most of the times I find it inappropriate and just rude (not all the time though like I said)

I dont like when people have mouths like a frickin sailor.
I mean...have a level of respect and decorum for yourself.

I was just talking to Chris a couple days ago and I told him that for the first time I swore without thinking about it for a second in front of my mother which shows that my mind is being... inseminated lol with foul language now because I am tending to use it more.

However, I never swear in front of adults ever (other than that but she didnt hear me), I never swear in a huge public place or professional situation. I just don't do it...I feel that its not my place or something...idk
maybe its how i was raised

Although I do swear a lot I also find it really annoying.
If I'm just with my friends or I'm talking about something that gets me really annoyed then I don't see the problem but if there's other people around then I think it's out of order.

I don't believe there's such thing as "swearing". There's no such thing as a non-word in my opinion.

I've never sworn. It's not that I have a problem with it, I've just never need to be put under oath. :)

douche

I may be wrong, but I swear that's a swear word.

But anyway, I have to agree that I just fucking hate swearing with all my fucking guts. These shits who can't stop swearing can all piss off for all I fucking care. Jokes!

To be honest, I do swear, but not that often. But I don't usually find it offensive, I mean it's just a word, isn't it? Although I wouldn't say it around parents, teachers, strangers, or any adult with authority though. But otherwise, I wouldn't find it bad because people who swear rarely mean to cause offence, and if they do, then it's not the swearing, but the fact that they are saying a sentence which is supposed to be offensive that is bad.

The same way that "fuck" is swearing. Or at least that's what I've heard - including content guides on the internet for films.
