Man, I didn’t expect this…
So what’s happening now is something that I just want to clear up.
I had a friend in the 6th grade whom I apparently made good friends with. It was pretty cool. We both loved video-games (especially the Super Mario and Legend of Zelda series), and other shit. Random stuff. He was pretty cool.
Apparently, though, he didn’t have any friends at all. In fact, the kids in my class didn’t like him, and they actually picked on him. I didn’t know what the hell their deal was (some of them were assholes), so I decided to talk to the guy. We had a lot of things in common, and we ended up becoming good friends. Video-games, drawings of crappy stuff (that was back when I was barely getting good at drawing), computers (he was good at them, and I learned from him), etc. It was all chill. Then the next year came, and I found out that he’d already moved to another school. I called him, and he confirmed it. I guess he didn’t like the school much, either that or ‘cause they didn’t have what he wanted. I didn’t know.
Anyway, I was pretty bummed out. I made new friends later that year, though. And those guys are still my best buds. But that’s not the issue here. After I found out he’d left, I decided that just ‘cause he was at another school didn’t mean we still couldn’t be friends. I was cool about it. So, one day my mom and his mom planned a day when I was able to come over to his new place (yeah, he completely moved) and just hang out. He showed me the new video-games he got, and some flash-animations he’d done. I said I’d help out with some of my drawings (man, those drawings were fucking crappy, but he was happy with them nonetheless), and we ended up having a good time. Playing video-games and hanging out. (The video-games varied from Paper Mario to Starfox to The Wind Waker.) Pretty sweet. When it was time for me to go, I had to pick all my shit, ‘cause I took everything out and left it thrown around everywhere. Unfortunately, though, he also left his video-games lying around everywhere. So when I was putting my stuff in my backpack, I accidentally stuffed one of his games in there. I noticed it when I got home, but I was fucking stupid enough not to call and tell him what happened. He called the next day ‘cause he found out it was missing. I told him I had it, and we had a laugh about it. What I didn’t know was how to give it back to him. So I asked if I could borrow it. That way we would have been able to plan out a time when I’d come back and return it to him. Things didn’t turn out that way.
The thing with long-distance friends is that communication is scarce. We’d usually have our own social life and our friends would be part of it. Long-distance friends aren’t. Calling was a hassle, ‘cause we had our own agendas. Months had passed, until one day I got a phone call. I saw his number, so I figured he wanted to chat (by then, I had forgotten about the game). But it wasn’t him, it was his mom. She wanted to talk to my mom. Then after talking with her for a long time, I noticed how my mom’s voice grew more concerned. Then my mom faced me and asked, “Did you steal a game from your friend?”
I gave a confused look, and I was about to deny it, until I suddenly remembered. “Shit,” I thought.
The word that I was confused about was “steal.” I didn’t steal any game. It wasn’t intentional. So I asked, “What’s going on?”
My mom then explained to me how his mom apparently was gathering up all his games, and she noticed how one of them was missing. His mom grew upset with him, and then he told her that I had intentionally taken the game home with me. In other words, I had “stolen it.”
I was pretty pissed right at that moment. He was too afraid to stand up to his mom, that he felt he had to throw the blame on me in order to save his own ass. Now I was responsible for it. It was an accident, but I didn’t mean for it to go that far. Then what I feared happened. My mom and his mom were arguing. My mom wanted to prove I wasn’t a burglar. His mom then wanted the game back, immediately. I had no idea how to return it, so I figured why not plan out a day to return it? I told him I’d have to arrange some shit, but that I would give it to him. It slipped my mind.
A few months passed, and his mom called back. She asked why I hadn’t returned the game. I said I would give it to him that weekend, but she didn’t accept that. She wanted money instead. She wanted my mom to fill out some fucking money-order of $60 in order to pay for the game. (Really, $60 fucking dollars for a GCN game that wasn’t even popular anymore?) My mom denied, and said we’d give him back the game. They both hung up. His mom hasn’t called since.
Man, that was five years ago. We were both in middle school. I’m about to be a senior high school. I’ve been chill since. I made new friends, had my fucking hard times and I survived. Now I’m taking a job opportunity class over the summer (I took it last year too). I suspected something when I saw an e-mail from the supervisor, and I thought I saw his name as one of the thirty recipients of that message. It was only a suspicion. Now the classes started this week, and it was confirmed. He’s taking the course too. Out of the hundred other courses for the summer available, he was in that one. Not that I was pissed off about it, but I was surprised. I thought the course would end quickly (there are a shitload of students there, and the class is pretty packed), and I figured he wouldn’t notice me. I looked at him and he looked at me, and I felt it. He recognized me.
Now, I have no idea what to do. I feel bad about happened. I don’t even know how to approach him, ‘cause it’s been so long. Should I apologize, or should he? Man, this is messing me up. I want to be cool with him again, and maybe even be friends again. Usually, I wouldn’t give a shit about situations like that, but this situation’s different. The classes don’t last long, and once they’re over, I won’t see him again. It’s the only time I’d ever see him in person during this time. I can’t ignore it now. What should I do?
