TV making people dumb

What does everyone think on Tv making people dumb? You hear it from some people tv is amazing and does wonders on society and others disagree. What do you think? My personal opinion it's certain shows like the twilight saga (http://www.imax.com/movie/TwilightEclipse/synopsis) that are ruining soctiety.

I think people are always going to do stupid shit to get on television. Hell, that's been happening since television was invented.

TV isn't the sole cause for the change in people's intelligence. It doesn't make it decrease always, it can make it increase as well. There are the stupid movies and series on but there are also informative and intelligent ones on. It's only a fraction of the cause.

it depends on the show and how long you watch it. and how much you are obsessed with a certain show. for example, the Twilight Saga - I like it but I am not obsessed with it. I think some people are just too crazy over it but it doesn't necessarily make them DUMB.

Unless you are somewhat inclined to watch intelligent shows and documentaries it will make you dumber simply because it gives people an image of how people should act and often times people gain a warped sense of the world thorough this. Also the fact that the use of language is so dumbed down on television that most people have the vocabulary of a young child due to excessive use of the television

Not saying lazy is always a bad thing, but lets say you're a lazy ass parent watching TV everyday eating a tub of fuckin' ice cream - that's not a good thing for the house really. So, laziness isn't always a healthy thing and keeps you from socialization from people.

So I would like to call the Television a brainfucker at best.

I don't think someone who watches political debate and comprehensive documentaries all day on TV is going to be as intellectually scarred as the teenager who watches the Jonas Brothers and iCarly for hours on end. Stupidity is caused by failure to learn. So if you're watching shallow, noneducational TV all day, it's going to make you "dumber".

People are always going to criticize every form of entertainment, from porn here on the Internet to "obscene" books to dangerous TV shows like Jackass or something. TV's not safe from society.

I can see shows like Jersey Shore, most anything on MTV for that matter, and just the shows that show people being whiny bitches to get what they want makes you dumb, because many of us will watch those often, as it does keep us entertained.

Now, TV shows relating to Real Life issues (Glee on Homosexuality, Documentaries, History Channel shows) can make you more dumb if you just watch those, but they are also plenty more intellectual than seeing a 16 year old screaming for an overpriced car on MTV.

I don't think TV makes people dumb, BUT I think that people who spend too much time with TV and technology will lose brainpower.

You really have to excercise the brain, too or it won't work as well...

I watch a lot of stupid shit on TV, and I wouldn't consider myself to be dumb. :|

Um...well mostly that is a comment used by parents towards their children, and at that stage it is true. Not directly, but it is the cause. Kids love to watch cartoons (I'm no diferent) and they always want to watch them. (Or go play outside or something). Seeing as how most of these cartoons do not require alot of thinking to understand just what the heck is going on, the brain is not being used and it takes away study time. So, in a sense, it does make one dummer because they are wasting time learning nothing and forgetting what they had studied previously. However, there can be educational programs as well and programs that cause your brin to think. (Mystery movies that offer clues little by little are great for this).

Tv seems great for relaxing your brain, but not so good for stimulating it. I think when you watch tv, the show is doing most of your thinking for you. Everyone likes tv, but too much of it will probably make you dumb.
