View Full Version : Banning or Locking Threads

I have never been banned but a few of my posts have been locked. Being locked or banned can be embarrassing to people. How about instead of telling us that a certain post is blocked or a certain user banned, how about just deleting them off the system to avoid embarrassment? So no one can ever see their blocked post or banned user?

This has been answered over and over again. Well basically the same question.
Posts/threads are usually (the vast majority of the time) not deleted because it affects the rest of a thread (quotes, replies, etc) and drops the post count of a load of people at once. I'm sure there are a load of other reasons, I just can't think of them.

Locking shouldn't be embarrassing nor should being banned. When you're banned, you did something wrong and violated some rule. You are therefore banned and much of your information may automatically be removed from the system (I think display pics are).
When a thread is locked, it is rarely to the fault of the originally poster. Threads may be locked because someone decided to wake the dead and post in a post that is a few months to several years old. Another common reason is that the thread goes on a tangent and strays from the original topic. If users begin bashing or posting nonsense, the thread may also be locked.

The mods always give an explanation as to why a thread has been locked this should allow other people to learn from it and not repeat the same mistakes.

This isn't a good idea because it is a learning experience for all.
When new members see a locked thread with the reason, they recognize why and try to avoid it (usually) so that helps all in the future.
Plus we try to avoid deleting posts as much as possible

They already do here.. Or did I miss the irony of your post?
Too many of those threads/users to do it. Besides, its necessary to teach you and other users what's exceptable( although, we're hoping you've read the rules) and what's not.

To be honest, if people feel embarrassed when their threads are locked, then it'll teach them to read the rules before posting threads and then they'll know why we lock the threads that aren't acceptable.

If their stupid enough to break the rules to get banned then let them be shown up for it
:D
and threads dont get locked if people obey the rules

You guys do have the ability to soft-delete, right?
Like it's been said above, normally when a moderator locks a thread it's for good reason. It serves pretty much as a reason as to why it's locked and as a warning to other users not to do it (i.e. bumping).

diary owners can soft delete in their diaries, so it's pretty safe to assume mods can in the main forums.

All soft deleting does is deleting an item so certain usergroups can't see it but it can be brought back.
So when a diary or regular mod soft deletes, we can still see it, just normal members cant.
Seniors can hard delete which means to erase the item from the site forever but I am not sure how this relates to the whole solution of this thread lol

I do understand what you mean but if a thread that it totally innocent is ruined by people breaking the rules, it's not your fault.

I honestly think we should be able to post in old threads if our post has a valid reason. And if the post is just something stupid, you could lock it. But I've seen some people post one old threads and say something that actually is related to the post and is informative and then the thread gets locked because of it.

That is because the thread was deemed to be 'dead' when people stopped posting in it enough so that it dropped out of the posting range. The majority of posts bumping old threads are just repeating exactly what was said in the thread whilst other people were still posting, therefore it's just pointless.
Plus who is to say what is actually contributing back into the thread and what is just a pointless bump, I'd say that it is too much of a grey area.

The reason why it was locked was because you broke the rules, plain and simple. I suggest if you find it embarrassing and in stead of making my life extremely difficult, you should follow the rules in the future and it won't happen. Public acts of moderation such as locking has been used since the site was founded and it's not going to change any time soon.

how about reading the rules first then watch what people say in your thread then personally VM or PM them to Edit what they say to avoid embarassment of having your thread locked.... on another note when you become a mod does a button appear in a thread so you can lock cuz now i feel like vt is in just like that episode of spongebob when krabs sold the krusty krab so it could become a super establishment and squidward was being an ass again so the new manager showed squidward that big guy who looked at squidward very angrily so squidward was pretending to be a happy camper... sry nostalgia i miss spongebob
