Suspected Taliban militants publicly hanged a 7-year-old boy for spying in the militant stronghold of Helmand province, an Afghan official told the Associated Press.

The child was placed on trial by the Islamic extremist group and later found guilty of working for Afghan President Hamid Karzai's government, the local official said.

Karzai on Thursday condemned the alleged act, calling it a "crime against humanity".

"A 7-year-old boy cannot be a spy," said Karzai in published reports. "A 7-year-old boy cannot be anything but a seven-year-old boy, and therefore hanging or shooting to kill a seven-year-old boy ... is a crime against humanity."

New British Prime Minister David Cameron — making his first visit to Afghanistan since being elected last month — joined Karzai in condemning recent attacks, including the hanging.

“If this is true, it is an absolutely horrific crime,” Cameron said during a news conference in Kabul. “If true, I think it says more about the Taliban than any book, than any article, than any speech could ever say.”

Around the time of the child's reported execution, insurgents also dragged a Kandahar provincial council member, Amir Mohammad Noorzai, from his house and fatally shot him, said local government spokesman Zalmai Ayoubi.

In the past, militants have carried out similar killings of those accused of spying, said Dawoud Ahmadi, the provincial governor’s spokesman.

Three years ago, a 70-year-old woman and a child in the Musa Qala district of the province were executed following similar allegations.

There has been spike in bloodshed in recent weeks for foreign troops in Afghanistan, and the latest NATO death — an American killed Thursday by a roadside bomb, the U.S. military said — was the 30th this month for the alliance, and the 20th for the United States, according to a count by The Associated Press.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

How could they do something like this? It's just terrible.
Then groups like the Taliban say it's the wish of Allah. Trash talk.

Why'd you have to italicize it? Anyway, that's pretty messed up. But what do you expect from the Taliban?

its disgusting but in no way surprising

I'm assuming the kid was not a spy as that means there's a spy school, which just sounds ridiculous. By age 6 would they be a full spy and by age 7 they go off by themselves on individual cases? I understand that since children are essentially brain-washed by religion they theoretically could be brain-washed for going against religion but spying requires improv for situations children don't have the mental capacity to do so. Kids can be smart but being this daring and using such detailed insight that many adults could not do? Not likely at all.

I assume that the case three years ago with the grandmother and the child also involved those two being spies.

It's horrible what they did and what they continue to do and have done.

Used them as warriors during the Crusades. The whole "oh woe is the world today" rubbish gets old, no pun intended, as this has been around forever.

Children's crusade never did any fighting Tim.

Half died of diseases, other half got sold into slavery.

And I think the point is that people think we've progressed past that, and get offended when people haven't.

Squires were children, so they had to the opportunity to fight, and when I say children, I mean teens.

This is a very low act, killing a 7 year old with a silly accusation. I hope they eradicate those blasphemers.

Why would they do such a thing? I don't think a 7 year old could be trained as a spy, then it must be psychological warfare. I'd be shocked if it was done for a different purpose other than that.

As much as I hate having our people over there, this is another reason we have to stay until these SOB's are gone...

Yes, because we can beat some cultural sense into these baboons with loaded guns. That'll totally make them drop their sick and twisted primitive traditions.

Or, you know, we could get them to change their ways through a mixture of education and the threat of death for those who commit atrocities in the name of sharia law.

Oh that's just brilliant. We can show them that its repugnant to go around killing people by going around killing people. Nice thinking.

No, it's about the only option we have though. You see, the problem is, there is nothing else some are going to listen to. If you can find a way that works better, be my guest. I'm serious. I'd love a better solution. But I can't find one. Anything else than overwhelming force, and you're going to have atrocities like this continue to happen, becoming more and more widespread. You find a better way to stop them, please, tell us.
