Genres like Experimental Rock / Post Rock, or Progressive, Bands like Anathema, Green Carnation, Eloy, and Division Bell Album by Pink Floyd.
they all have Wonderful songs, Anathema's Judgement album was their most Progressive and Depressive Album.
Green Carnation's most Progressive and Post Rock, is A Blessing in Disguise. and the Burden Is Mine.. Alone album either.
Eloy's genre was always Progressive, sometimes Blues, Post/Experimental, Progressive Symphonic rock, but i dont find any of their songs depressive.
and Pink Floyd is well known enough. :)

What bands do you like?

Porcupine Tree is one of my favorite progressive bands EVAR.
Anathema is good atmospheric prog rock. Their new album really explores the genre pretty well.
Mars Volta is a good experimental prog band. They're really fucking crazy which is good.
No Man is like a progressive jazz band in some ways.
Ephrat has some pretty good shit. They're an isreal prog rock band.

And I end my post with my favorite progressive song ever

and i also like Prog bands like Air Bag, and Gazpacho, their 2009 albums, Air back did Identity, and Gazpacho made Tick Tock. very impressive albums.
@Munkyduck, sure it counts, progressive death metal is one hell of genre. i guess Moonspell's Pecado was progressive black metal, i'm not sure tho.
