View Full Version : Israeli attack on Gaza flotilla: media already losing interest?

Only three days since the deadly Israeli raid on the Gaza flotilla, already there are signs that American news media are beginning to lose interest in the story. While the BP oil spill understandably dominates much of the news, the Gaza story should also be getting continued media attention but instead is beginning to fade away, replaced by new stories such as the Gores’ divorce, Sarah Palin’s nosy neighbor, and a new murder by the suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. These may meet the water cooler test (what are people likely to talk about?) but not the public service standard (what do people need to know in a democracy to make enlightened policy decisions?). As a former Middle East reporter for Newsweek and CNN, I know how quickly editors and producers lose interest in foreign news, but this is astounding. The few Gaza stories that are still being done are focusing on angles such as continuing protests abroad and policy discussions within the State Department on how to handle this crisis. But what about the plight of the people in Gaza? Whatever security justification may be made by Israel for its blockade, that needs to be weighed against the human suffering it has brought about. People born in Gaza have little to look forward to in life. Few can find jobs. Most are trapped and cannot leave. They are permitted little more than subsistence food and medicine. Today’s Washington Post does touch on their plight, but we need to be reading more about this and in greater depth. We need more stories like "Captives," the excellent piece by Lawrence Wright in The New Yorker last November, with its distressing details of the prison hell that Gaza has become.

Heh. I think even this thread will have people to lose interest in it.

Everyone is silent about the Israelis atrocious doings on the oppressed Palestinians.

It is funny how Israel makes -- what do you call it? Cease Fire or deals or truce or whatever they are called. At the end, eventually they will break it.

As a Canadian I can't stand Israel and what it does, they themselves have flat out committed Nuremberg crimes
I think we should have absolutely no dealings with the entire middle east PERIOD
WE are an energy superpower, we don't need to deal with their shit.
the main reason the west supports Israel is because it gives a strong western military presence, but its not worth the bullshit, nowhere near.

That being said
I also don't care about Israeli news
I pay attention to how many coalition soldiers die
and I watch Iran now n then
Past that, we have bigger concerns
The Gulf being a major one.

In the Gulf? Arabian Gulf? Heh, we are living in a careless world, that's the Gulf.
Kuwait, U.A.E, Qatar and Bahrain. They are built for entertainment.

I do think what did happen was very bad for the world. No country should be allowed to "block" another country off. I hear that the UN can search ships instead but Irsael no like this idea so they storm the ship instead. If Israel were that worryed for Gaza citizens they should allow UN to search ships instead.

Gulf of Mexico. The huge oil spill that no one can fix is there. Might even find its way over to Europe if not stopped soon.
