We've already had this before, but. The word emo, is over used, and often ill directed towards people that don't, by definition or by desire, fall under the title of emo. emo is defined(by wikipedia) a style of music. Now, anyone who wears black, or who acts just a sad or depressed, or people who attempt suicide, or people who cut. This is wrong. People who cut are not suicidal(at least some) people who are sad are not self harmers. Who else agree's, the word emo is ill defined, and over used, a product of this new culture. Thanks for reading.

Eh, its a typical stereotype now based on characteristics more than anything. It's fucked up, but i guess its the same as calling a chav, well a chav for living say in a counsel estate, listening to RnB, not spelling correctly etc. "Emo" Means emotional, and since everyone has actually noticed that definition everyone that shows the slighest bit of emotion to something is deemed an "Emo". What they don't understand is that everyone shows some emotion to something at one point in their lives, they all think drastically at one point, we've all been there, even if we don't want to accept that. So why cause shit? It's life i guess, >.< Stereotypes are like a never ending food chain.

But theirs a difference between calling someone a chav, and saying a person who might just be in a bad mood suicidal.

It's all fucked up. In my school everyone calls something that's different "emo" which is so wrong. Sometimes I wanna punch everyone for their ingorance.

Which is exactly my point. It is fucked up.

emo is something sterotypical, as Kaius said.
some brand themselves with these labels, and then give others a bad name.
one thing i do wish to say, is that
not every emo cuts, and not everyone who cuts is emo.

sterotypes are stupid, but they happen. it's life.
yup. it's fucked up. but thats what people who dont understand things do.

I think Emo is more of a fashion statement now. Just like Goth is. Or expressing yourself. Self harm is self harm and shouldn't be classified as Emo or whatever. I hate being called Emo. I don't dress like it or nothing.

Did I make sense at all?

Emo is what all those ignorant people who don't understand anything would call us.
i HATE being called that, they call me that just because i always look depresed! but what do they know...

errg i hate that word :l some people come out with, 'emo's are attention seekers, and they slit their wrists because they think its fun.' i wanted to punch this girl so much for this :l
emo is a dress style and a music style. nothing else. 'emo' is not people who self harm, and people that self harm are not 'emo'. All these sterotypes get me really angry :mad:

when i told one of EX friends about my self harm a few years ago, she came out with,'so basically, your an emo'. :mad:

Agree. The word emo is just so stereotypical, and it also has such a horrible connotation.
The other day, whilst sitting around in class, I was snapping a hair tie against my wrist, and the guy next to me says, "What is that, some sort of softcore emo thing?" And then he went on to make exaggerated motions of snapping a hair tie. It just pisses me off, I guess. I just hate the assumption that people self harm because they LOVE pain.

the word Emo annoys me for many reasons 1: people who self-harm R shoved into this box 2: me being a Goth i have a disdain for the stereotypical Emo person....

Emo is just a streotype, that people who self harm are normally automaticaly pushed into.
I agree with what Nat said about not everyone who cuts is an emo.
But I guess thats the way it works with streotypes

Emo has so many meanings and none of them are rite. I hate when people call others emo. We not emo. Cutting isnt to get attention and were not mental. were hurting or not feeling something tht we want to feel. I hate when people say emo cus it rle hurts others

I think emo and goth are perceived as the same for some reason.

Emo is a lie.
Anyone who "claims" to be emo is a lie. If someone tells me that they're so emo, I know they're so poser. Anyone who calls someone else emo and believes it are idiots and they're blind to the fact that the origional meaning of emo has been lost forever. It's a LIE, and it's rediculous.
Anyone that has a myyearbook, go to the "emo" forum. It's so rediculous, everyone is either ridiculing "emos" or defending what one is. It's so stupid and it's all so pointless.
Emo =/= cutting.
Emo = LIES.

Emo... a bunch of people who are conforming to not conforming. I'm not saying that in a good or bad light, that's just what I think when I hear the word since every self-proclaimed 'emo person' that I've ever met has made a big deal about not conforming. I have never met an 'emo' person who has SI'ed, so to me, the whole stereotype is founded on false grounds.

It is sad though, how people who SI get put into this category. The first 'help' forum that I ever went to for SI, all I ever got was being called an emo and being told to go kill myself.

Of course. Its not entirely down to the eye of the beholder calling someone emo, its down to people defining themselves as emo cos they think its cool and edgy, when its not, and just makes them seem like a tool.

Ok I dress in 'emo' style and I do cut but not to fit with these stereotypes that people lable us as... I see this stereotype from both angles being a self harmer and being of the 'emo cult' and I can speak for both sides saying just cos someone is one they aren't the other.

I dress according to my mood which is often a empty bottemless pit feeling like I am unstable, standing on a rickety surface and low, so low I dont want to even get out of bed most mornings.

So anyone who reads this thread and doesn't understand how it feels to feel so shit you don't wanna know beleive when I say is not an 'emo' thing, it's a problem that we wish we could but cannot help. Stop labeling us wrong, an 'emo' has a face, a self harmer doesn't.

Sorry if this makes no sense it's ten to eleven here but I can't sleep so am on here while I'm not tired xx
