Emo - Emotionally Hardcore.
Stereotype - Cutter, suicidal, wears black, is obsessed with anime, has long scene hair, skinny/anorexic, mean, self-confident.

What does this all mean to you? Care to add on the stereotype, or describe it yourself? Do it if you dare >:)

i hate this stereotype. i really hate it.

i was stereotyped as an emo once because of my self harm. it really annoys me.
i dont wear black, i'm not obsessed with anime, i'm not particullarly skinny, and i'm certainly not self confident. people just assume things about self harmers before they get to know the facts, or even begin to understand, which is how all this emo crap started :l

sorry for the rant :P

Hate this stereotype. I get called it, even though I am not an emo. However Im:

Cutter
obsessed with anime
want long scene hair
skinny
self-confident.

So I kinda fall under the stereotype. However its just a type of music, I think. :S

self confident - hell no. If your depressed, most of the time (for me anyway) Its anything but self confident.

another stereotype is people who sit alone all day, and has black smudges under there eyes, also very pale, and tired....one of my friends said also lots of studs. -_-

I think it's no better than accusing gay people of being feminine, we're all different and don't depend on stereotypes to determine who we are.

Being very pale & tired isn't something you can control & is a lot of the time due to health problems, so wtf. lol.

I hate how the first few posts are bashing the "emo" stereotype, especially the first reply. Moreso I hate how this thread is doing nothing except encouraging people to generalize against emo kids. Defacing the stereotype is counterproductive in any sense.
Instead of bashing, why not make it a discussion as to what emo is since all the cutters are so adamant that they seperate themselves from the stereotype.
Emo is literally a shortened version of the word "emotional."
In forms, emo is a fashion, a music, and to some it's a mindset.
The emo genre of music is derived from hardcore punk (emotional punk, emocore) and is one of the newer music genres, thus by many, it isn't considered a genre.
The emo fashion isn't black. Again, generalizing, most emo kids I know where flashy colors much like the "scene" stereotype. And obviously the typical "emo" hair thing-a-ma-jig.
As for a mindset, I'm not bothering to go there.

Emo - Emotionally Hardcore.
Stereotype - Cutter, suicidal, wears black, is obsessed with anime, has long scene hair, skinny/anorexic, mean, self-confident.
About the stereotype.
Cutter does not equal emo. Emo does not equal cutter. /end discussion.
Suicidal? Okay? Anyone can be suicidal, it doesn't mean you're emo. /end discussion.
Wears black? I've already discussed that.
Obsessed with Anime? The hell? I see more gamers obsessed with anime than emo kids.
Skinny/Anorexic? Lol, emo kids come in all sizes. /end discussion.
Mean? No, just stereotype. Emo kids are amazing, the stereotype was made by people who fear the difference.
Self-confident? No, the stereotype is usually that they have self-esteem issues. /facepalm.

another stereotype is people who sit alone all day, and has black smudges under there eyes, also very pale, and tired....one of my friends said also lots of studs. -_-
Sit alone all day? The emo kids like their friends. ._. I love the stereotype's tendency to fail.
Black smudges? The hell? You mean bags or makeup? .-.
Very pale? Again, look at the gamer kid stereotype and how the "fake" emo.
Tired? I guess that's what you meant by black smudges, but it's called sleep deprivation. Or maybe insomnia, anyone can have it.
A lot of studs? Piercings are people in general. .-.

I think it's no better than accusing gay people of being feminine, we're all different and don't depend on stereotypes to determine who we are.

This is the best post in this thread.

Well said there Josh :)

I hate stereotypes, I know I do, do it sometimes with the certain people but it is wrong. Going back to this...

How can someone who's suicidal and a cutter be self-confident? Surely if they were self-confident they wouldn't be suicidal or cutting..?

Going back to the wearing black thing...If that's the case then my whole school is "emo" our uniform was black, black jumper, black trousers, black shoes etc. I know its not the same cause we HAD to wear it but I'm just making a point.

Mean.... Everyone's mean. You saying that people who are cruel to animals, kill people, are in jail, are emo cause they're mean...?

Ooookay, I'm gonna shut up now ^_^

On that point, and since this is a stereotype thread, I'll use a stereotype to prove my point.
Short and sweet: The stereotypical jock is mean, so is the stereotypical jock emo?

Okay, I am constantly been called emo.....I suppose I am...DX

I cut, I wear...what i suppose you may call emo...clothes sometimes and I love the musc that goes along with the stereotype...

But that does not give people the right to call me it, does it?

I hate all stereotypical people...just be yourself!

Congratulations, you successfully stereotyped. It's hypocritical to "hate" stereotypical people when you turn right around and make a stereotype yourself. And by the stereotype you assumed and the generalization, yes it could give them a reason to call you emo, but then again, is there anything wrong with being emo?

Lol, i guess i did... xD

But, no..nothing is really wrong with it...it's just when people don't like you for being one it gets annoying.

Cutter - Yes sir.
suicidal - used to be, not anymore
wears black - my family makes fun of my for it all the time. (yes)
is obsessed with anime - Not obsessed but I like it a lot
has long scene hair - I wish :P
skinny/anorexic - I used to be anorexic, but not anymore. And my familyteases me for being so skinny all the time (even though I'm the weight I'm supposed to be)
mean - I'd like to think I'm not that mean..
self-confident - Heck no lol

I guess I fit most of the stereotype.. but I still hate stereotypes! no matter what the stereotype..I've always hated them..

It doesn't mean anything to me anymore; the term isn't even that well known among the folks in my school, much less have a distinct group of affiliates. No person is truly one-dimensional, no matter how much stereotypes tend to portray one as so, and I am always very intrigued to learn of the character behind every appearance. Quite often, there are sharp contrasts.

There is no need to criticize anyone for being stereotypical, but there is equally no need to deliberately conform to any stereotype for any reason. Shape your character according to what feels most natural and compatible to you, and if that just happens to coincide with a stereotype of some sort, it's unfortunate, but don't let the closed-mindedness of others have too much of a negative effect.

All trends will die out at some point, including the misconception that people who dress a certain way and have certain artistic tastes must inevitably be self-harmers. At some point we as a society will look back and find it utterly absurd, as most things like this usually are.

Usually If someone told me they were Emo(Yes people have labeled themselves before) I would think that they listen to rock music, love anime, like black, wear eye-liner, and dont like popular kids. But hey, I hate labels and I know that nobody fits a perfect stereotype, therefore it doesnt really exist does it?

Alot of people would say Emo is a genre of music, not a group of people. I definitely dont agree with this anyway. ALL music is emotionally driven.

Emo is so variable in today's society, and although I have not been labeled publicly, I am not in favor of how others are plagued so harshly.

To me, "emo" simply means that an individual is more emotionally senstitive or in-tune with their emotions than those around them.

Witty saying time!! "The world will tell you who you are until you tell the world who you are." Most people aren't themselves in any way shape or form, that is unless they have a mask. Then they'll tell you everything you ever wanted to know. In many ways i think people that try to fit the emo stereotype are just trying to find a way to reach out to anyone for help. They're using that as a mask of sorts. I dunno, who cares, they need to just get through puberty and quit being idiots. They being most teenagers not just emo kids.

Yes, the label does exist. Why? Because you opened your response by generalizing with your assumption and thusly confirmed the label's reality.
All music is emotionally driven? I don't think "Supermanin' the hoe" is emotionally driven at all. Music doesn't have to be emotionally driven at all, it just has to have two verses and a chorus of utter nonsense. Will it be good? Likely not, but hordes of people will listen anyway. Doesn't make it emotionally driven.

I diddnt mean that I felt emo's were like that, these were just a few things I picked up from my friends... ._. Hell no, I think emo means Emotionally Unstable?
Why emotionally unstable? Why not just emotional?

I agree with you a lot, but I think the kids who label THEMSELVES as emo when others do not are moreorless attention seekers. The crowd has become much of that.

@Whoever +repped my earlier post. What did you mean I redeemed myself in the post? My posts are all one sided, I'm not changing sides to have to redeem myself, it follows the same general path.

I am emo, It took me a while to embrace it but yes. Emo doesnt always mean depressed or 'I wanna die' although It is like that for some people it means you are sensitive to people around you
